Ok, who else gets sappy when the ASPCA commercial comes on tv?
It was just on again now & OMG! The music & the photos they show of all those poor dogs & cats looking so sad get me blubbering like a baby every time it comes on. Makes me want to adopt every one of them!

it's ridiculous. There was dog named oreo here in NYC who got thrown out of a window by his sadistic owner. The ASPCA took him in and helped him...great..THEN they were going to euthanize him b/c they didn't feel he was "adoptable". The shelter I donate to...BEGGED them over and over to release the dog to them. They have exp with this type of dog and have HUGE success adopting them out but no..the ASPCA never returned ONE SINGLE phone call. There were calls left and right and still they put that poor dog down when he had a second chance. I'm sure they do good work...but ALOT of that money goes to admin costs and salaries. I prefer to donate to a no kill shelter where I can see the money really go to the animals. But that commercial gets me every time but recently I just get annoyed b/c it's the ASPCA. The founder of this organization is probably deceased and I'm sure he never intended for the board members to be getting paid that ridiculous amount of $ instead of it going to the animals. 4|2|That's just plain dispicable.....this is what ruins it for charity organizations....people in general will|kellysp6637|frugalk76@aol.com|12:57:59|01/01/2010|

You would first have to understand this specific area and why they deal with the outside orgs. When I first moved into the south, that area featured in 20/20, was within a stones throw. There are few local organizations able to handle incoming monies or goods. The local people are busy getting thru' their day. While there are some good people willing to help-it falls short of actually providing someone with the job. Most everyone wants and needs proof of their donations going to a good cause. Is anyone actually willing to take another persons word that it is being put to good use? Those days are long gone.
To date the Catholic church is doing the most in the Inez area. Keep in mind the church keeps it's percentage as does every other group. The Nuns need to eat too!

not only with these charitable organizations but our local Catholic Church's Church/Religion Coordinator makes $100,000 PER YEAR!!!! Our religion teachers & assistants also get paid, although it's only a couple hundred dollars per season if you multiply it by 20 (10 grades, 2 people per grade) that's at about $4,000 per year/season. When my mom taught religion 15-20 years ago AND she wrote the caticism (spelling?) it was for FREE.

Another thing that irks me is that my parents have in the past "Sponsored" a child (& his family) through the Christian Childrens Fund AND they also have done the Walmart "Back To School" thing where you fill a back pack with school supplies for the needy. WHAT THE H***!!! I,(yes their child) with then 4 kids (now only 2) whom are their grandkids could use this help for back to school supplies.

I say people need to start supporting people in their own communities/families/schools. This also goes for the rich & famous who'd rather support outside the U.S. It needs to start here at home right in our back yards!

it is so hard as most families do not want people to know they need help

I give when different events hapen, such as the fires that happened here in Coatsville. My daughter's school where she teaches did a big drive for clothes , etc... and they do the school bookbag thingy but it is basically the foodbank and angel trees at other times

I did the soup kitchen thing years ago but work on Thursdays and that's when they do them here, but I have decided to start working with the food banks again since I do well matching sales and coupons, think that is somethng most of us can help with.

It's come on at least once a day here during the holidays & it makes me cry every blasted time. :( The music they use just adds to the sadness. Then I have to go do something to take my mind off it cuz it really bums me out.
Whether it's helpless little kids or helpless animals, commercials like that really get to me. This one's been on alot lately. I know the pics & the music is meant to tug at the heartstrings to get more people to donate or adopt, & I know how much caution is needed due to greedy, crooked people, but it's what's behind the sad eyes in those pics - the thought of all the suffering from abuse, neglect, hunger, etc. :(

Hope for Lynch: County residents donate shoes, money for impoverished Kentucky children

Ann Hutchins helped to lead a local effort to aid impoverished children in Kentucky.

By MIKE ROSIER/Publisher
Published on Thursday, January 22, 2009 - 8:59pm | News
First Byline:
MIKE ROSIER/Publisher
JOHNSTON - The downtrodden children of Lynch, Kentucky, who are fortunate enough to own a pair of shoes are often only marginally better off than those who don't even have them at all.

One story tells of a little girl cramming her feet into a worn old pair for so long the shape of her feet became altered because of the effort.

Then, after being provided with a brand new pair of shoes, the little girl returned to school the next day wearing the exact same pair of confined, noose-like shoes on.

When asked why she was still wearing the old pair of shoes, the little girl revealed that she had given them to her sister instead because - in her words - her sister needed the pair of shoes even more. The devastating reality behind this little girl's story is that she is not alone.

There are many, many more stories just like hers.

The area is a part of Appalachia which has been devastated by mine closings, drugs and, perhaps most of all - little hope.
Ann Hutchins has seen the desperation with her own eyes.

She travelled to the town this past fall as part of an outreach group from Phillipi Baptist Church in Johnston. What they found collectively left them as heartbroken individuals for the people there.
The group included Rev. Mayhew and Marianne West, Marshall and Beverly McGee, Ashley McGee (medical team), Gary and Louanne Gilley, Terri, Vickie and Libby Timmerman, Wayne and Melanie Rosier, Linda Crisco, Sandra Bledsoe, Tara Parkman (medical team), Hutchins and her granddaughter Brittany.

Hutchins says one little boy - looking a little malnourished - walked over to her table and began looking at small piece of embossed wood which read "I Love Jesus" on one side and "I (heart symbol) Jesus" on the opposite side.

The boy stared at the piece with a bewildered look on his face.

Then Hutchins realized the problem - the little boy couldn't read.

"What does that say when a little boy who is 8 or 9 years old can't read something like that?" Hutchins asks. "And that was just one example. There were all kinds of children there just like that."

Their gift packets (some 500 of which were handed out) included toiletries, booklets and a salvation bracelet. There was also phone number included in case someone had questions or needed further assistance.

Hutchins knew right then and there that she would strive to do even more in the weeks ahead.

The Incredible Need

Hutchins said the church group had received information through Meridzo Center Ministries (a longtime church ministry outreach in the area, www.meridzo.com) concerning many students (around 200 to 300 kids) who did not have food to eat on the weekends. A new program - "Sacks of Love" - was being implemented to provide children with a backpack filled with food they can prepare themselves when they are away from school - and the regular meals they receive there.

The children are provided with the backpacks of food on either Thursday or Friday afternoons and the backpacks are then returned the following week.

Also, the Resource Center working with the schools stated the obvious need for new shoes for the students, as many children are in desperate need of properly fitting shoes (like the aforementioned little girl and her sister). The center recognizes the needs and fits children with a pair of shoes through donations.

The Community Response

On December 13th, 2008, Hutchins and her husband, Ken, held their annual charity Christmas Drop-In. The event (now in its 5th year) has grown in popularity as guests are invited to come and enjoy the "Taste of Homes" as delicious foods were prepared by Diane Yonce, Sharon Davis, Tara Parkman, Terri Hutchins, Juli Corley, Cecilia Rodriquez and the hosts.

The event has benefited various causes such as Katrina victims and a boys home.

There was never a doubt as to where this year's aid - always geared toward children - would go.

Guests were asked to bring a "new" pair of shoes for the children of Lynch, Kentucky, or to supply a gift card which could then be used to purchase food to be included in the "Sacks of Love" program.

They responded overwhelmingly as the generosity of the community brought in well over 100 pairs of new shoes and more than a $1,000 in donations for the "Sacks of Love" program.

"I would like to personally thank each and every person who has contributed to the needs of these children," Hutchins said. "We are blessed with a community who always responds to those in need. Thank you for your continued support year after year."

More Support is Needed

As the "Sacks of Love" program continues to expand into other schools in the Lynch area, more donations of food, back packs and of course, shoes, will be needed.

Food items needed include canned meats (in pop-top cans) such as Vienna sausage, potted meat or tuna, Beanie Weenies (in pop-top cans), individual cans of fruit, peanut butter and cheese crackers, small bags of chips or cookies, granola breakfast bars and pop tarts, individual boxes of cereal, small boxes of raisins, small bags of nuts, juice boxes, milk boxes, pudding cups and Ramen noodles.

For additional information, or to learn how you can help, please contact Judy Caulder (803-438-1400/803-243-4203) or Shirley Johnson (606-848-0092).

Monetary donations may be sent in care of Meridzo Center Ministries, P.O. Box 425, Lynch, KY, 40855.

Also, please specify where you would like your donation to be applied - for the "Sacks of Love" program or the program to provide new shoes.

I by far am NO expert on this subject but I do know that around Thanksgiving time our Catholic Church puts up a real Christmas tree, it's called a giving tree, & attached are tags that say GIRL age 12 , BOY age 9, etc...,also on the tags are things they want or need, people take off as many tags as they want, they purchase the items & bring them back to church for distribution. So only the people incharge of this program know who the receipents are.

Also our local chapter of Lions & Lioness'es also put on a gift giving thing for Christmas. The persons involved persay "know everyone's business" so they contact those that might need help, if you say yes they send you out a form, you list persons in your household & their wants & needs and the families within the Lion's Club "adopt" people that are in need. Again only the members within the organization know who is being helped. I believe they even provide food for these individuals for Thanksgiving.

These services might even go off a list of persons that are on the food shelf list as to who to contact.

Our school also put up a Christmas tree and asked students & staff to bring a gift to place under it & the stuff would be given out to our local children in need.

Also at school an email was sent out to staff asking if they knew of a family or families that would be in need of gifts for Christmas.

That is about all I know about my community. So I am sure if you could contact your local organizations they may be able to give you more information. HTH

The one I'm part of is Project Read Redwood City, a library-based literacy program with paid city librarian staff (that means way underpaid for the local cost of living) and volunteer tutors--my schedule is too bizarre to tutor but I can help with funds.

My cousins in Western MA are volunteer drivers for an organization that picks up surplus food from restaurants and distributes it to shelters. They're on call one day a month, but they also donate--their daughter once asked for contributions to the organization in lieu of birthday gifts.

Consider also any meal-on-wheels program, food bank, or the local ASPCA. 33|1|I do, I turn it and then hug my kitty.|seahawk|Seahawks57@aol.com|20:25:50|01/02/2010|

The music is sad. I don't know how some people can be so mean to animals. The shoe should be on the other foot for 1 day to see how it feels.
