But I have heard that if you express a definitive opinion (like if they ask you how you feel about the death penalty or something... they want you to be unbiased) - that may help. But it's rare.

Go -- it's not so bad and can be interesting! 2|1|Are you in NJ? You can delay it at least once, that may help. I could not get off with financial hardship,|Mackiesmudder|Mackiesmudder@aol.com|01:34:40|01/01/2010|

jury duty and go every time......but that's because I'm the ultimate crime buff and love seeing how the judicial system works (but then again my major was criminal justice).....

If you don't go and delay it, you will get put back in the pool to be called again.....if you do go, then you can't be called to duty for a certain amount of time (forgot how long).....it's pretty inevitable that eventually you will be called to go.....if you can go, I'd just go and get it out of the way....Good Luck with what you decide. 6|1|I've been called to jury duty (where I actually had to report) twice....once for Federal court and once for Circuit court....I was so excited to be a part of the process, but both times the defendant decided to plead guilty on the day the jury pool showed up :( Like Kelly, I have an interest in crime, evidence, the justice process (wanted to be a lawyer in my youth, but could never afford college for that many years).....it is interesting, and while it does take away from your usual routines of home and work, I think everyone should experience it at least once....I'm hoping I get called again and can actually serve on a jury someday! :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|08:33:20|01/01/2010|

The 1st time I was called, I made the gallory for jury selection altho I wasn't selected to serve on the actual jury. A little disappointing for this crime "investigation" buff even tho I'll admit to being somewhat nervous about the responsibility of deciding someone's fate. ;) The 2nd time, the case was settled out of court the morning I was to go in but I was still "on notice" for the remainder of that month should another case arise.

It is actually an honor & a privilege to be to be called to serve jury duty. As my cop friends have said, it means you've kept your nose clean & are setting a good example for your fellow citizens in doing so, but it is also your consitutional right as a non-criminal & a civic duty in which you're able give back to your community.

Your best bet is to go along w/it & maybe just hope you're not selected to serve on the jury or the case is settled before the jury selection date. Once your "term" has been served, you likely won't be called on again for.... I think it's 5 yrs.

If you were being accused of a crime, would you not want to be judged by your peers?

I have seen it all and even seen where the judge ordered the sheriff to pick up the juror who was not there.

I have seen prospective jurors serve time in jail because of the way they acted.

Pooh!

got the notice the other day, the courthouse is not in the best area and away from where I live. At least they could have picked one closer to my huse. ugh! 15|3|In my state, you can request to be reassigned....I've done that before|kellysp6637|frugalk76@aol.com|13:46:03|01/01/2010|

when the courthouse was about a two hour ride for me....and was reassigned to a courthouse closer to home.....as I've said I love to serve...but don't want to travel two hours to do so.

On your card, there should be a spot about location...see if you can have it changed to a closer location. 16|1|I had my jury duty postponed for roughly 6 months the only time I was called|Abbicca|Abbicca@insightbb.com|14:47:38|01/01/2010|

At the time I was going to college out of town, so I just asked if I could wait until summer break. Sure enough, I got called during the summer---had to go sit and wait to see if my number would be called to POSSIBLY be selected for jury---and, you guessed it, my number came up....I got selected and had to sit for a roughly week long trial. (I'm just glad it wasn't a long drawn out trial)

It's really not that bad.....if you live in a big city it is probably only a 2 week term, and you don't have to go in every day (call in to see if your number has to go in the next day). And if you DO have to go to the court house....if you're not called you usually go home by 1 PM.

I admit I'm not looking forward to being called out here.....because I think it is a 6 MONTH on call session. ACK! But, we don't exactly have a lot of court cases....obviously.

I wouldn't fight it and just be honest.... it isn't that bad. 17|2|I don't understand how people are selected....|KellyJef|burke3536@yahoo.com|10:40:15|01/03/2010|

I'm 62 and have only been called once for jury duty. Because of a chronic medical condition, my doctor wrote a note saying that I needed to be excused.

DH has never been called.

And yet, I know people who have been called periodically.

18|3|How you are called depends on the state.. I know in Maryland they switched it from who voted to who got traffic tickets LOL|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|16:16:51|01/03/2010|

They found it discouraged people from voting if it was based on who voted so they changed it to who gets traffic tickets. I kinda like it that way makes me laugh.

You can delay it ONCE up to 12 months. HOWEVER, be assured that you WILL get on a jury on that rescheduled date. Illness/medication is not an excuse in MA; pregnancy is not an excuse in MA; being a sole proprietor is not an excuse in MA; nor is being a sole caregiver. It's a civic responsibility that we all have to do - might as well enjoy the day.

And as others have mentioned, being on the panel and having to actually show up and serve are two different things.

In MA you can only be requested for jury duty once every 3 years. If you are scheduled and asked to call the day before and they say thanks, we don't need you... that counts as appearing.
