We get together with my mom and siblings .... each person brings a hot and cold dish; my sister is a really good cook so we can never wait to see what she made! We use crockpots so people can just eat when they are hungry and then snacky/finger foods as noted by someone else.

Here are some of our family favorites;

crockpot meatballs: you can start with those frozen meatballs, a jar of grape jelly and a jar of cocktail sauce... it sounds strange but they are really good
crockpot sloppy joes
crockpot short ribs in bbq sauce

meat and cheese tray (or cheese ball) and crackers

veggie tray with dip

one year we did make-to-order kabobs on the George Forman grill, it was a lot of fun but messy; we had a selection of veggies and fruits and pre-cooked cubed meats (beef and chicken) that you could mix and match what you liked on a wooden kabob stick and then grilled a few at a time to heat up. Had onion, green pepper, pineapple, cherries, etc.

punch bowl filled with frozen orange sherbert in ginger ale

cookie platter

I always make a cheesecake from scratch, change the flavors each year but the one using an Oreo base and cheesecake with mini-choc chips is always a hit no matter where I take that one

We have PIZZA. LOL! I am normally all stressed out trying to finish getting everything done, so I keep it simple. Frozen pizza is a norm or if we are really exciting we will order something before places close. Christmas day we really like to go out for Chinese.

We are an odd family!
We do normally break into the cookies and eat way too many of them on the 24th as well.
HTH. 5|2|Hey V sounds fun We usually order a sandwhich tray but I ain't feeling it this year lol so I thought I would do something different|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|10:51:52|12/17/2009|

7|3|teener, or you could have a "sandwich bar"|couponshelmd|couponshel@comcast.net|10:56:28|12/17/2009|

like a Subway, then each person could make their own sub.... that would be a little bit of prep work for you to slice and dice fixings, but would mean a fresh sandwich when people arrive. And just set out the mayo, mustard, etc. I think it would still be cheaper than buying a sandwich platter from a store?

8|1|How different would you like lol|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|11:12:36|12/17/2009|

You could do breakfast for dinner. One of matt's friends does a summer themed cookout. Burgers, dogs, salads, etc. I have no idea what we're doing. I really hadn't given it much thought.

And you would not believe how many requests for different things I have to wade through. I make them take turns picking something because otherwise I would be making 4 different breakfasts just to make each of them happy.

I've been seeing those KFC commercials lately... how about chicken? 12|4|My aunt said she was getting KFC for christmas LOL. You reminded me.|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|12:11:27|12/17/2009|

My kitchen barely holds two people and trying to maneuver around anyone else in it makes me all crabby so it always seems easier to cook alone, but I really should get into the habit of leaning more on Jason and Sierra for help. They get away with way too much laziness on the weekends even outside of cooking.

LOL about your aunt! I think it has been 2 yrs or so since we had KFC so it sounds so good to me. They were advertising a big meal deal for $19.99 (10 chicken, couple sides and biscuits... yum!) I need to keep that TV on PBS because I am way too swayed by advertising this month! 15|1|My kitchen is tiny. A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
