My mom just called me a little bit ago to tell me that one of my nieces was in a bad car accident this afternoon & is in serious condition w/a broken pelvis, broken collar bone & facial injuries, & she's in alot of pain. :( She has/had a small car & was hit by a big, diesel pick-up. Fortunately, it was the passenger's side she was hit on or it could've been worse! She has 2 small children & is such a good person so this is very upsetting. She's been attending full-time college classes in the Criminal Justice program & was on her way to pick up her little boy from Kindergarten to go home.
Please send up any extra special prayers you can spare for her & her 2 little ones who don't understand.

At this point I don't know much more than I did last night so I'm kind of frustrated. I don't know if Kelli was going to have surgery last night or if today, but hopefully asap as she's in SO much pain so is receiving morphine in the IV. I'm hoping to get in to see her later today or tomorrow.
Please keep the prayers coming for her & her family, & also for my mom who is pretty shook up.
Her 1 yr. old little girl is staying w/grandma & grandpa & her 5 yr. boy is w/her sister for the time being. Her dh is worried sick & doesn't what to do either, & having the 2 little ones separated is very difficult on all of them.
She's a beautiful young lady, inside & out, so we're all praying very hard for her as she's likely going to be facing a very trying & lengthy recovery. She had just a month left of this semester for her Criminal Justice classes but she's been working so hard at it, taking on 20 credits on top of raising 2 little ones. And this happening to her right before Thanksgiving & Christmas is going be especially hard on her as she loves to host the holidays & goes all out. But rest assured, we have ALOT to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

I understand there is no surgery required for a fractured collar bone, that it heals on its own? She has, however, had numerous x-rays & consults w/specialists regarding her pelvis but at this point, the drs. are NOT recommending surgery on it as they fear trying to fix it could make it worse than it already is - it is unfortunately broken in several places, crushed in medical terminology. :`( so they fear surgery could do more harm than good. She is being kept as immobile as possible & can't eat yet (due to her entire body being traumatized) so has the IV & is only able to suck on ice chips - not going over w/her very well w/the dry mouth. At this time, drs. say she'll be in the hospital for at LEAST 6-8 wks. & then is looking at a very loooong rehabilitation process, possibly extending to a period of time in a nursing home to continue therapy. She's not paralyzed, thank God, but being able to walk again w/out assistance is going to be difficult, particularly in the near future. And because she has some bumps & bruising to her head, that is being monitored very closely & is of more immediate concern to the drs. right now than the pelvis & collar bone (these injuries are on the same side).
Because the accident happened just yesterday, everyone was so upset & up in the air that some information wasn't entirely accurate (understandable!). But, she was in fact hit on the driver's side & after seeing her car (I didn't/don't want to but her mom did), she is VERY, VERY lucky to be alive.
So.... Prayers are still SO very, very needed.

14|2|Tami, send her to me, I'll take good care of her and our therapists will have her up and at 'em :) In all seriousness, I would recommend she ask about going to a rehabilitation hospital rather than a rehab center/nursing home.....given her young age the limitation of time/availability of contracted therapists at nursing homes, they often only get therapy 5 days a week....if she were to go to a rehab hospital, she'd get therapies 7 days a week, and have doctors available on site to monitor her healing and pain issues. There are some rehab facilities at the hospital she's in but I don't know if it's only for short-term or what or how extensive it is. It seems anytime anyone's needed any kind of longer term therapy/rehab, they've always ended up in one of the nursing homes, no matter what their age. But you're very correct about nursing homes providing therapy just 5 days a week, not on the wkends, & I've always wondered how that affects the person's progress. Wouldn't it delay it or almost be like taking a step back & having to start all over again come Monday?
She's in a good hospital, which we're all grateful for, so hopefully the hospital will have some good recommendations on what's in store for her, as far as continued therapy/rehab, as she gets closer to a release date. I imagine alot of it will depend on what happens between now & then, the extent of the damage & IF surgery should happen to become a possibility.
All we really know for sure at this point is approx. how long she's going to be in the hospital & that long-term therapy is definitely going to be needed.
I just feel SOOO bad for her cuz she doesn't deserve this. :(
On top of it, her dh seems to have done an about face (maybe it's always been there) & is more concerned about the car being wrecked & is po'd at her cuz he'd wanted her to get full coverage insurance on it but she only had liability so he's ticked they won't get any money out of the wrecked car. WTH??? Who cares about the fricken car, for Pete's sake! It certainly wasn't a Rolls or a Caddy, not even close to new! Vehicles are just a chunk of metal that can easily be replaced, SHE can't!

Believe it or not, my niece was released from the hospital & came home day before yesterday (Mon.)! The drs. claimed she was doing so well that she could go home. We think the insurance co. had a hand in it tho cuz even my niece didn't feel ready so we were all quite surprised the drs. released her this soon. Especially since they initially said she'd likely be in the hospital for 6-8 wks! Please don't get me wrong cuz we're all very, very grateful she's doing as well as she is, we're just concerned for her & so surprised they'd release her so soon. It was only a week since her accident.
She needs to use a walker & cannot be left alone due to the continued dizziness & headaches from the concussion, instability from the pelvis & collar bone injuries & pain meds.
She's a determined & strong young lady but still has a long road ahead of her so please keep the prayers coming that she'll continue to recover w/out any problems.

It seems to be a common thing and I am sure that you are correct in that the insurance company had a lot to do with it. Praying for her as well as your family as they are pulling together to help her through this.
