20 0|0|OK----can I get some help for an "undomesticated goddess"?|Abbicca|Abbicca@insightbb.com|16:23:37|11/23/2009|

Laugh all you want...and feel free to make fun of me... I do it all the time about my lack of culinary skills. I've wanred my husband a few times that he's likely to be poisoned now that our "taste tester" cat had to be put to sleep.

ANYWAY.... I've never cooked a turkey before, and went and bought a 20lb+ frozen bird. It's been defrosting in the fridge for almost a week (wanted the slow but sure method as I didn't need it till THIS week). Just borrowed a roaster pan from my sister (Did I mention my kithcen is also undomesticated---LOL).

I DO have an oven!!! (One gold star for me!!) And I DO know how to turn it on, set it, etc (Hey...baby steps here, people!) I plan to use a Reynold's Oven bag which is SUPPOSED to cut an hour off of cooking time and make for no basting (Cause let's be serious...THAT ain't happening).

So how long do I cook the monster and at what temp? Do I need to add broth, water, or stock to the bag?

Any help from experienced cooks, who have yet to burn down their house, is welcome! TIA!

follow the directions on the box and you will be fine. they are really easy to use and really do take an hour off the cooking time. next time use a disposable roaster.. a lot less clean up.

Make your DH cook the bird. Mine doesn't cook anything all year, so I figure a turkey a year is pretty fair. I do everything else and between the two of us we manage to make it edible. LOL. He just cooked ours yesterday (early I know) in a bag and a disposable pan (ditto on that for next year because you can just toss it and it is so much easier!) He got all fancy this year and took rosemary and olive oil and garlic and covered it all before closing the bag. It is so good! Normally he just tosses it in the bag and that's it so this was unique for us.

Looking forward to Thursday when I will make all the sides and everything. Yum! 8|2|ROFL..... if I didn't honestly fear that the house WOULD burn down if he cooked it, I'd try it|Abbicca|Abbicca@insightbb.com|18:48:34|11/23/2009|

But as undomesticated as I am..... my Dh is worse when it comes to anything not microwaveable, or pre-mixed, with easy directions.

For all those that were worried or had prayers going up for the safety of me and my house.... apparently they were heard. Home is still standing. :) Turkey got cooked. AND (wonder of wonders) we have eaten of the bird and are still alive to tell about it!!!

Now what to do with the rest of a 20-21 lb bird---and having only had 2 people eat off of it (that means LOTS of leftovers)... so THAT is the next problem. We know we have many turkey sandwiches in front of us. But since it was just the 2 of us, we didn't go ALL out...just turkey, jello, green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes. No dessert. We had planned on corn but vetoed it at the last minute after seeing too much other food with just 4 dishes.

Apparently, one of our friends was not quite so fortunate.....we asked if they wanted to come over for supper (they had lunch with their family)....and somewhere today the girl had an accident and is on crutches. OUCH! Still not entirely sure what happened and won't find out till tomorrow.... or maybe it was a polite excuse since it was my first time cooking the bird...LOL.

We now have 4 gallon bags of leftover turkey (2 white meat, 1 dark meat, and 1 mix). I'm sure that there are many here who could have done a much better job of cleaning the meat off the bird---but it is still more leftovers than we know what to do with. Hope everyone else had a safe, non-poisonous, and happy T-day. 14|2|you can freeze some turkey to have for another day :)|lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|21:15:46|11/26/2009|
