The bell ringers have started for the salvation army. I went to the market today and the guy was out side ringing the bell so I knew on my way out Id be giving a few bucks. Now I know It should make me feel good to know Im helping but
when the person collecting doesnt even say thank you have a nice day or even look at you when you hand the money over is kinda rude. Anyone else feel this way? I mean come on cant they even say thank you? After I gave the money and they didnt say anything to me I felt like a jerk. Next time I will think twice before handing my money over. grumble grumble 1|1|lol i know the feeling|vickicruce|vickicruce@yahoo.com|17:26:48|11/21/2009|

When I see these guys i keep driving by the store. Its not that I mind giving if I had any to give but they hit you up on your way in then out and every time after that. Then if you dont put money in everytime you walk by these people they look at you like your a jerk. Im petrified of encountering them lol. I think Ill add that to my list of fears. 2|2|my husband was like no dont give them anything but I feel funny just walking by|Mumzie|luckiestbamboo2@aol.com|17:31:07|11/21/2009|

I would have done what I do when my 3 year old forgets to say thank you and that is I say "YOU're WELCOME" real loudly. She always gets my point and maybe that guy would have picked up on that cue. Or maybe not, but I hope that you know that your money will still go to help someone who really needs it and you should feel good about it. So, I will say thank you since someone should have. :0) 7|1|Just be happy to know that you helped someone out. The money isn't going to him. I would encourage you to call your local Salvation Army to see who was designated to that area tonight and that you didn't appreciate the attitude and that a simple thank you would have been nice. That way it will get addressed and hopefully won't happen again. They really need donations now. That one person represents alot of people. I wouldn't stop giving because of one person. I would definetly address it. We do the Salvation army Christmas Toy Drive every year and hardly anyone ever shows up to help but what keeps are family going every year is knowing that we made a difference in hundreds of children's lives at Christmas. One year I asked one of the workers a question and he had this attitude like there was some issues going between him and the captain but honestly that's between them.. I just blew it off and kept doing what I was there to do.... make a difference for those families that wouldn't have a Christmas if volunteers didn't give money, toys or of their time.. You made a difference!

Not everyone who rings the bell is directly associated with the Salvation Army. DD and I spent 3 hours ringing last weekend- it was a service project for her 4-H club (members' families took shifts all day). We met a few others who said they would be volunteering later in the week. So, please try not to let it reflect badly on the organization. They told us what to say, but apparently some people just don't *get* it. What a shame that his momma didn't teach him better manners.

Also, no one has to feel bad if they decide not to give. Honestly, in that 3 hours, I saw only 3 people I knew go into the store. The rest of those people I will never remember (even the ones who stopped to chat), so I don't care one way or the other if they gave or not. You can turn that around, too- if someone looks at you rudely for not giving, you won't ever see them again, so who cares what they think? You live your life, give if you want, or do something else instead. Personally, I prefer to give actual food to our local SA. I do a much better job of shopping than they do. :) Makes my $$ go a lot farther. 10|1|I don't give to big organizationa anymore because|Lucy1|mail_man73@webtv.net|10:59:15|11/23/2009|

a LOT OF THE MONEY goes to pay HUGH saleries for the higher ups. So little of your dollars go to help the people intended. Now my money goes to the local animal and people places.Nothing goes out of my area The local animal, local foodbanks and feeding the local homeless are the only ones that get my money. I can speak from experience on what the Salvation Army does for a family. During the 1st Gulf War, my dh was deployed to Iraq. Before his money started rolling in we were advised to contact the Salavation Army.
I contacted them and set up an appointment. I would say within 2 weeks time (probably less) they PAID my car insurance, heat bill (gas in JAN), mortgage payment, lights & phone. The ONLY thing they wouldn't pay were credit card bills.
When I left, the girl told me if I needed any more help to come back. I was one of the lucky ones, because I didn't have to contact them again.

I will gladly give them a $1.00 no matter where I am. It would be nice to get a thank you, but I don't feel it's necessary because I'm only returning the help they gave me.

The Red Cross is the one I will not contribute to. My husband was gone 5 1/2 months and I was home with a baby. The Red Cross sent $10.00 when he came home.

More examples of dealing with the Red Cross: My Uncle contracted malaria when he was in the Army durning WWII. They never
notified my grandmother of his being in the hospital. The "free coffee & doughnuts" for soliders were not free. My father
told of how they charged them for the coffee & doughnuts.

Needless to say I wouldn't give them anything.

Sue, I dislike the Red Cross for many reasons!

I am more than happy to give my change, and then some, to those bell ringers!
