When we got our loan with the van we had to roll over like $7k negative equity. It came from flipping vehicles too fast and too often. So we got gap insurance. It covers us if anything happens to the van and it's totaled it pays the negative balance. You don't come away with extra money but at least you don't owe. It was like an extra few dollars a month.

It's like a mortgage............ If you pay 1 extra FULL payment (mortgage plus ins and pmi not just the mortgage payment by itself) a year you can cut your mortgage from 30 years down to as little as 22, and if you pay 2 FULL payments a year you can cut it down from 30 to in between 12 and 18 and so on.
Needless to say............ our debt "snowball" is getting quite large and we are anticipating having only our mortgage and car payment by the end of April. *crossing fingers*
