22 0|0|Has anyone made their own vacuum bags? I have been pondering this idea for over a year now, always gets thrown on back burner..lol!!|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|17:30:28|11/14/2009|

I have a big bulky hoover and the bags for it are expensive as heck they cost around $7 for 3 allergen filter bags, down to my last paper filter bag, and just really don't feel like having to spend money on something that is tossed out in the garbage. I took measurements of the filled bag today & I think this week I will set to work on making my own set of cloth reusable bags, much cheaper and adding less to the landfills is always a plus.

I never even thought of that. How would you clean them out? Just dump them and maybe rinse and dry? That is interesting.

I lucked out at a rummage sale awhile ago and got a huge box of about 40 vacuum bags (for a whole $1), so I am set for a long time. But I am intrigued at the idea of a recycled one...

I would design it like the paper filter bags. On the paper ones I noticed on the top of the bags they roll the paper down and then glue, so what I would do on the top of my cloth bag is make mine roll down also, but fasten it closed using a strip of touch tape(high grade of velcro like clothing manufactures use very durable)to run across the top of bag..then when the bag is filled just open the top of bag, empty in the outside garbage can, and can throw it in the wash or just rinse it out and hang dry it. And the hole in the filter bag that attaches to the tube, I will add elastic around it so it will fit on snug and won't come off.I also have another idea of how to hold bag on tube, but gotta see how that idea works. Once I get these made up, will post it on my blog with pic's..

4|3|What kind of material would you use, Linda? This is a super idea! :) The material would have to be dense enough to keep the dust from coming back out, but not so dense as to disturb the air flow....and durable to wash....I can't think of anything but muslin! 5|4|I was thinking on the lines of muslin also, but don't have any of that fabric on hand...yes, need it to be breathable, but contain the dust..|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|19:24:31|11/14/2009|

was thinking of using gortex which is a nylon breathable fabric, has a slick coated side(waterproof)so easy to wash clean, dust will just slide off when rinsed. Gortex is kinds expensive though $8 and up a yard and can only buy on line so not sure on using that. I was thinking of using a thick flannel cotton, and see how that works. I remember my grandma having a vacuum that we had to remove the outer cloth bag off the machine and dump as it didn't have a filter bag, fabric was like a heavy curtain material so that would probably work well also if I could find some at the resale shop cheap,

6|5|Ah, Gortex, that would be good too....it would be worth the $8 a yard though, that bag should last for years! LOL I remember those old vacuums too, the upholstery/tapestry type material on the bags that you unhooked to dump out...|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:27:14|11/14/2009|

7|6|lol!! yeah the bag should last for years, I made a pattern today might be able to get 3 bags out of a yard of gortex...so now that I think about it not bad for the price.|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|19:32:28|11/14/2009|

I suffer from insomnia so I am always up till the wee hours of the morning and always working on a project, crazy sleeping hours. I stayed up till 6 this morning and got my first cloth vacuum bag completed, it stays on the hose nice and tight and easy to dump the dust out and since the nylon bag is a thin durable material it dries fast when washed or rinsed out...Vacuumed the whole house today with it, and took pictures, it will post it on my blog tomorrow. Woo-hoo!!!The best part, it keeps the dust contained in the bag! Bf & Robert are use to me always coming up with something..lol! They think this great I came up with this as no more spending money on the bags. They were shocked when I said I have been pondering it for a year, as I usually dive in right away on making something when an idea pops in my head.

** I went with using Gortex~ which is a thin material, but very durable(they use it for outdoor clothing)light but also waterproof & breathable. Then I sewed a zipper in the front so the bag can be emptied out.

I don't know if any company's make a cloth bag, never seen one and don't know how well these would sell. we live in disposable world where some people like throwing stuff out and not having to do a little work to reuse items. Perhaps these would go over well on a site that promotes living green and being eco-friendly though.I am thinking about a patent, but they are expensive...am thinking about contacting the manufactures of hoover bags and see what they have to say.
