Father in law is cleaning his pantry and has boxes of canned goods and cake/cookie mixes he will not use. The expiration date has passed on some of these. How do you know when it is too old. I plan to keep part of it, but some things I would like to give a needy family if it is still good. Thanks for the help. 1|1|Cake mixes might not rise as the baking powder/soda in them probably went bad, but other than that as long as it isnt too outdated, but I dont think food pantried will take expired food|kandywolf|kandywolf@gmail.com|10:52:07|11/09/2009|

I think so cuz it's the ingredient that makes the stuff rise/fluff up when baked.
I always put my dried goods like that in the freezer overnight right after I buy them cuz it extends their life & reduces the risk of mealey bugs, or whatever they're called. I know tho that the mealey bugs come from the flour, cornmeal &/or wheat that's in the dried goods. But you can leave the stuff in the freezer for as long as you like, just so it's been in there for at least 2-4 hrs.
