Presently, most insurance through work is done with PRE-Tax dollars.... which means you are not paying any state(most states follow federal), federal, or SOCIAL SECURITY and MEDICARE on that money.
By making it deductible.... it IS included in your income...which bumps your income and no matter what you WILL be out the 7.65% of social security and medicare which you were not before. Then you get to deduct it....but at the VERY least you are out the 7.65%...no matter WHAT your income level.
I am praying for a different method of deducting---or else it will hurt much worse than just the 7.65%. But by raising your taxable income..it will affect the calculation of many credits for taxpayers...including EIC and CTC.

I already knew it is currently "pre-taxed income" anyway. It was, however, and important point that I merely pulled from what I had read. I know a LOT of people were worried that they would have to pay taxes on their healthcare spending so that's why I posted it. hth :)

Like you, Joy, I'm more concerned with next year with elections coming up. I am afraid that too many politicians will be casting their votes based on the current mood and possibility of being re-elected. Also, I am afraid that too many might be swayed from however they WANT to vote because I have HEARD (not seen it in print--I want to clarify this is a RUMOR as far as I know, but it worries me if it is true) that the president has basically said he would not support any Democrat who was not supporting his health care bill. And last I heard, the President still had a 40%+ approval rating versus 20%+ for Congress---so that WILL make a difference to many of them.
The whole point of having elected officials is them looking out for the people in their states and voting according to what those people want... not their own best interest to get re-elected or supported in possibly re-elected. This health bill is a nightmare. This is a complete government takeover of our health-care system passed in the House on a Saturday night by sneaky Pelosi - why the rush? For the elderly, it's a death bill. We have to vote out these traitors. They have their own special health-care package so we all should be entitled to the same. I remember growing up that my parents had the catastrophic health-care plan (for emergencies) and paid $10/$15 in cash each time we needed to see the doctor. This was a great plan. Also, tort reform is badly needed which was talked about during Presidential campaigns and simply long forgotten.

I just wanted to point out what WASN'T being said and was NOT being pointed out in the bill. Normally the word "deductible", when it comes to taxes, brings a smile to everyone's face--- I just wanted everyone to realize the ramifications to it....and that EVERYONE...even someone who makes only $5000 a year--- will be LOSING some money in this deal---assuming that they're not already on totally free government health care already.
heehee...You've been pointing out page numbers (which I do think is great) for where to find certain areas of the bill...but I think my PC would blow up if I tried to download the whole 1990 page bill so I cannot always go looking up the parts to the bill.
I just wanted to expand on what you'd said...most certainly didn't mean to imply you thought it was a good thing. Just wanted to point out that deductible in regards to taxes does NOT mean totally tax free. :)
