11|1|It's a bit like asking someone's salary...|couponshelmd|couponshel@comcast.net|14:42:34|11/05/2009|

Everything being relative, someone people do tend to spend an extreme amount at the holidays. Some people may only spend a fraction of their income. Like comparing apples to oranges to me.

I just think the question is a lot like asking how much one makes for a salary... we all do something different for a living so it is just a bit like apples and oranges.

This has been a difficult year for many of the people on the board, many of us are wishing we HAD money to spend. So in good taste, I won't insult anyone's opinion :)

Blessings,
Shel 12|2|yeah, every Christmas is different.. as toddlers, my children had to get from charities, because I had no income.. they are grown now, and now I only really put real money on my grandbaby, the adult childs can fend for themselves...|car_mont|car_mont@hotmail.com|15:09:53|11/05/2009|

Aren't the holidays more about the reason for the season/holiday than how much you spend on gifts?

Call me SCROOGE but I don't think how much you spend on gifts is what the season is all about.

The season/holiday has been so commercialized and people get so greedy that in our family we no longer exchange gifts. We decided this about 5 years ago. We exchange the promise to always be there to help friends and family when we can all year round and this doesn't mean giving them money but actual "help" when we can.

For example...family friends needed our help the past three weekends putting up a new horse fence and taking down the old horse fence. My family was there no other questions asked. We pitched in and got it done and saved them a TON of money. This favor will come back to us when we need their help with something...no doubt about that. This was a bigger gift to them than anything we could have given them for Christmas.

The only money we really spend is when we pick a few "foster" children or "mentally challenged" adults off the gift tree at the mall at Christmas. This is the only "gifts" we actually buy. And the notes we get back from the adults for their gifts (which are usually requests for very practical items, like toasters or cooking pans, towels, sheets, etc.) are so special it touches your heart to be able to help them.

So I don't think it's all about how much you "spend" on gifts.

Off my soap box now...

Jennifer in North Carolina...the Tar Heel State 16|2|For me the holidays are not about how much you spend on gifts, we buy eachother(adults) what we can, and they are things we need or can really use that |HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|15:30:50|11/05/2009|

are on our wishlist, and if we don't get anything for x-mas, it's okay...we consider x-mas presents a bonus anyway. We enjoy a great meal together with family, watch the kiddos open presents, help them put there new toys together, play with the kids and that is what makes it a great x-mas for us. I believe x-mas is for kids, we just buy the kiddos a couple toys, spend maybe $15-$20 tops on each kid, I only have 2 kiddos to buy for this year, as I don't speak to some of my family anymore.

It's about togetherness & helping each other, not just during the holidays but all year long. :) The last few yrs. I've gotten so fed up w/who spends how much on what that I gave up even trying to please. :( When I was a kid, we got something new just twice a year - our birthday & on Christmas, & it was maybe 2-3 things at most from my parents but I tell ya, it was wonderful & SO appreciated. One year we were so poor that we wrapped things we already had but wanted to give to one another, & the tree came from our front yard after dark. It was one of the best Christmases, none of us caring if things were "used" but we were together, happy, warm w/good food, & the element of surprise & excitement was still there. Anymore, kids get so much stuff they don't know half of what it is, hardly appreciate it & likely don't get to play w/it or wear it before they've outgrown it. Gifts are ripped open like a feeding frenzy & then most everything but the item itself (sometimes the item is inadvertantly tossed too!) is tossed - pretty bows & wrapping paper, packaging & instructions, etc. - & then it's hurry on to the next w/nary a blink of an eye. Last year, I remember feeling happiest & the most relaxed just sitting w/my mom in church during candlelight service on Christmas Eve. There was NO stress or whipping my head around like Linda Blair in the Exorcist to try & keep up w/who was tearing open what, just quiet, calm & peaceful. I believe that's what it's all about but some seem to have lost sight of that.

We hit Black Friday sales hard and heavy and I bought a bunch of gifts at the after X-Mas sales last year nad put them aside.

We adopt a few kids through Social Services each year and try to get them as many clothes as I can (usually 2-3 outfits total) and a winter coat and a "fun" item too for around $30-35 each (which goes along way at the Black Friday sale). That's really the only money I track for X-Mas gifts, the rest of everyone I do what I can.

etc, before, so I'm not sure why this would be considered rude..I don't see any difference between talking about how much we spend on groceries or how much on Christmas....same sitation applies...some spend more, some less....I don't begrudge someone if they want to spend $300/ week on groceries while I spend X amount....that's their decision.

Each person/family has their own holiday traditions....and how they celebrate and what they can or choose to spend....personally, I try to use as many gift cards, coupons and promotions as possible to limit my spending....but that's just me....some people choose to or are able to go all out...and that's great for them.......

All that matters is that we are with our loved ones for the holidays and every day between them..... 22|2|we do this too..................|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|16:31:05|11/05/2009|

Every year we give to Toys For Tots and we pick 2 names of seniors on Christmas trees whenever we see them. (Last year it was Walmart) I already have a box of stuff for Toys for Tots and I'm hoping to be able to toss a Zhu Zhu pet in there too! I always try to give the "hottest gift of the year" if I can afford it. :)

and it's been discussed before.

If you don't want to answer, then don't.

We don't exchange gifts at all. We take the money we "would have" spent on gifts for each other and spend it on buying toys to donate to Toys for Tots -- it's wayyyyyy more fun :)

ooooops forgot the lego sets!

during the last Kmart super doubles event there were several different "if you buy such and such you get such and such of a catalina" deals going on. everytime i shopped i got at least one $5 cat and sometimes as many as 3. the thing is........ when you get a register printed cat (black and white) AND a catalina machine cat (red and white) you can use BOTH together! The register printed ones are KMART SAVINGS COUPONS and do not count as a manufacter coupon thus you can use 1 of those as as many red cat's as items you have in your cart. The Thomas trains were 10.99 or $14.99 and i had $2, $3, $5, and $12 kmart coupon and cats totaling $126.00 so i used them in conjumction with ip co's to get the items for free or nearly free.

ie:

Mr Potato Head: $ 7.19 i used a $5 kmart register co and the $2 ip co and paid .19 cents for each (got 2)

Trains: $10.99 used a $5 kmart register co and a $5 cat = $ 1.41 each

Extra Track: $10.99 used a $5 kmart register co and a $5 cat = $ 1.41 each

Extra Cars: $10.99 used a $5 kmart register co and a $5 cat = $ 1.41 each

Trains $14.99: used $12 kmart register co and $2 or $3 cat = .19 or $ 1.19 each

Train station set: $ 49.99 used $12 kmart register co & $5 cat & $25 gc for transfering hubby's script = $10.65 BUT they are going on sale Sunday for $34.99 so I will have them price match it (since it was within 30 days) and get back $14.99 plus tax (probably on a gc) but I don't care........... free is free! :)

Lego Sets clearanced to $5.29 used $5 kmart co (or a cat can't remember) = .31 each

But now that older son is getting more specific, and younger son has gotten all the hand-me-down toys, I have cut way back.

I had them pick out 3 toys that they wanted from Santa, and I will get them both those since they were inexpensive. I bought a used PS2 and a ton of games so that will be the BIG gift.

Hubby and I spend little on each other (don't need anything) and we will just do restaurant giftcards for the grandparents.

I will guess $200-$300 total.
