So, hubby and I recently decided that I was going to continue to stay home even after the kids went to school...I take care of everything around the house and we have a rental property, etc.. I just want to be home and be as much a part of my kids lives as possible. Well, recently we've started about homeschooling them. We live an hour outside of Atlanta but even good school districts around here (which we just moved into a good one) aren't GREAT. And I'm worried that especially in 2 1/2 years when our little one is in school it will just be worse.

So, anyway - my kids are only 2 1/2 and 1 so I have a while but just wanted to get other people's thoughts. Do you like homeschooling? Do your kids? How did you get started and know where to begin? And just any other thoughts on it. How are the kids with socialization? etc...

It's just on my mind a lot right now.

Thanks!

Let me start by saying homeschooling is different for every family according to their own personal needs. We use Abeka videos now. I use to use the books but we switched over a couple of years ago right after my accident because I was having issues w/sitting down. As for socialization our children are in ballet, tap, jazz, Cal Ripken baseball, Youth Ministry, art, guitar lessons, Patch The Pirate and other church activities. So, with that being said socialization is not an issue... Always remember there is good and bad socialization...We watch who are children are around and put them in activities that interest them as individuals. We also do alot of ministry work and compassion projects. I would suggest you go to a homeschool fair and check out all the cirriculum to see what best fits your family. Also, check out the homeschool legal defense website. If you'd like you could also join a homeschool group in your area.. You have alot of options and your schedule will change according to the needs of your family.. Always remember to set your home up according to your own personal needs. Don't follow anyone elses and take breaks when you need it. Don't worry about the public schools days off... Your kids don't go to the public school and everyone is home those days. We do the opposite... If the public school is off, we're not. We take off when we need it and go on vacation when everyone else is in school. Makes our life alot easier and more enjoyable. We shop during the day and not on weekends. This frees our schedule tremendously and noone is in the stores.....

Pj is in 1st grade and going to the same private school he went to last year but the results are NOT the same. The teacher is new to the private school "industry" (for lack of a better word) and she's still acting like she's at a public school. His grades are MUCH worse this year than last (got his 1st report card today) and he's not excelling like he did last year. We work with Pj on his math, spelling, phonics, reading and writing every night (even on the weekends) for sometimes as long as 3 hours and he's still not doing well. I know the teacher is a good woman but I am wondering if something is wrong with the "system" this year. We've had 4 (yes 4) meetings so far with the teacher and the administrator and they both keep saying he'll "get it" but WHEN? And why has his writing gotten so horrible? It was really nice last year. I'm also finding that the teacher isn't giving us DIRECT answers to our questions unless we are in a meeting. I'm not the type of parent that just sits back and watches what happens.......... if my child needs help I do everything I can to see that he gets it but it's like the teacher thinks we're interfearing or something. We aren't trying to interfear with her teaching..... we're trying to LEARN how she teaches so we can teach the same way. kwim? Anyway........ if you're up for it I am all for homeschooling and I say it can't hurt to try it. I wish you the very best of luck! :)
