I am looking to purchase a kids sewing machine but do not want a junk one (dont need op of the line either). anyone have any advice on which one would be the best? I was looking on amazon and found a few but not sure how they would work. I want to make sure the machine does a decent job and can be used as the teen gets older

If you want a good sewing machine reasonably priced but vintage your better off buying a singer sewhandy from the 60's, I read up on sewing machines and that sewing machine was made durable and exactly like the adult version, no difference...they made the sewhandy to encourage young girls to learn how to sew and many adults use that machine...If you want the machine to last for years you need to go vintage, anything dated 50-60's, 70's as that is when they used all inner metal parts, thats why the machines have lasted for years, the parts don't break..The singers are a great brand pre 1987, as that was the last year the singer family owned singer, they sold the company to companys in Japan and china and began using plastic inner parts and the quality went down...Singer family went into national security...very smart people!
Whatever machine you decide on it would be be great to get one with a zigzag stich, as you use the stich for the raw edges of fabric to keep it from fraying. I have a kenmore machine with 10 different stiches, paid arounf $100 for it on sale about 7 years ago, it is testy...made of plastic and consider not the best machine, but it works..I also have a vintage industrial singer red eye 66 machine, all cast iron, made in 1916 and that one sews like a dream...paid big money for it, but worth every penny..

Try a local sewing maching center. They have trade in's at a good price! Don't throw your money away on plastic sewing machines. 3|3|problem is, I have to ship to another person so that would add to the expense|petunia1|sweetpea39@comcast.net|21:55:07|10/27/2009|

stay away from the plastic-if you want it to last. Try calling a store in her area and see what they have in your price range. Explain the situation they may even deliver it for you. 5|1|my daughter won one of those plastic ones at a school raffle. was SO EXCITED =) broke thrid time using... wasn;t so excited anymore...|Jacqui_OHIO|swaptonz@yahoo.com|12:53:50|10/28/2009|

at a fraction of the price new. I have owned mine for over three years now. I love mine and so do my daughters. My oldest DD(28) got one of the Project Runway sewing machines from Overstock and she is in heaven with it.
I have been sewing for over thirty years and I have found Overstock's sewing machines to be great.

Here's a link to Overstock.
