A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

I hate that you have to pay for the yearbook before school even starts. My son started HS last year, and the yearbook was $60 if you ordered it at registration. Once school started, it was $75. If you don't order until Nov. 1, goes up to $90, and last chance to order is in January for $110! I almost choked!

It was actually $62 but since he wanted his name on it, it was an xtra $5. The $5 for his name didn't bother me but the base price sure did. :(
Call your son's school & see if they're willing to accept half a payment now w/the remainder due after the 1st of the year or something. I did this my son's sophomore yr. cuz it was just too much of a financial pinch for me that year, after the school registration & lunch fees, supplies & clothes, pictures & then w/Christmas coming up. They were agreeable to it so it helped alot. :) Since they don't get their yearbooks til the last month of school, they got the remaining balance in plenty of time.

My son wasnt interested in the other years-- pics of all older kids--- and knew it was expensive.

He also skipped the $400 high school ring; knowing he'd never wear it in college.

He is now in college and when he asked for $100 for speakers for the computer; I easily said yes knowing how good he was with the things in HS that were unnecessary.

BTW, he didnt take the HS yearbook to college, it's sitting in his room. 10|1|why do you have to have ALL of the $ by NOVEMBER?|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|08:20:58|10/27/2009|

S's is $50 and since she is pretty involved in school events (drama in particular), I feel like I have to get it for her. Lucky they let us do 1/2 up front and 1/2 by Jan something, so that buys me a little time.

Now she did not get the middle school yearbooks and I think when they did the yearbook signing day it was kind of hard for her. I didn't like that because it felt like we were pressured to buy it (and since this town is so affluent, it felt like pretty much every other kid got one which was also hard to deal with), but it bugged me that they were still very expensive in middle school too. I can't recall the exact cost, but close to $50, maybe 40? Way too much for that age range if you ask me.

I think the schools should maybe allow some of the kids to work off the cost of getting one, maybe especially in those middle school years. That way they are not left out of family can't afford it and it teaches them that they have to work for what they want.

I still have my high school books and every few years or so when I get one of those "classmates" type e-mails and see a name that I can almost place, I go look the person up. Myspace too... there have been a few people who contacted me and I had to pull them out like a dusty old encyclopedia of my early days to see who they used to be. That was fun, so I suppose they have been worth having. They sure are heavy to move though, every time we move I complain and say they will not make it to the new location, but they do!
