that painting over wallpaper is never a good idea. The paint is heavy and it will completely moisten the wallpaper, which will then become unglued from the wall and begin to peel and/or sag. Not a pretty picture, especially after putting in so much effort and money into painting the wall. It would be worth the small cost of removing the wallpaper first, before painting. You should be able to buy wallpaper remover from any home improvement store (like Lowe's or Home Depot). Good luck and let us all know how things turn out for you! 3|2|I have |mo6g02|crazylady47952@yahoo.com|08:13:17|10/11/2009|

I have heavy vinyl wallpaper on my back porch that was stuck so tight that it wouldn't budge, so decided to paint it. It took it real well. Then we painted daughter's room, she was told to remove any loose paper, which she didn't, so we did have to go back & remove the paper & repaint, but it looked ok, so was no biggie just messy. Unless your paper is heavy vinyl, I wouldn't recommend it as it will pull away from the wall like in my daughter's room.

when we moved into our home the previous owners painted over the wallpaper inour bedroom. you could tellit was painted over wallpaer, didnt look horrible but not great either. I use hot water in a spray bottle to take off wallpaper and it does a pretty good job. you just spray over any smallpieces that remain. if you paint it, the paper soaks in the paint and if you ever decide to take off the wallpaper it is plastered to the wall and extreme;y difficult to remove. take the extra time and take off the paper. a bit messy but worth the time

On the DIU shows they add a little bit of fabric softner in with the hot water. I have neve done this as usually just the water works.

Good luck!! 5|4|This is good to know about removing wallpaper w/hot water in a spray bottle, w/or w/out the fab. softener...|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|11:19:10|10/11/2009|

Cuz I have some old wallpaper I plan to replace on my one bathroom wall. I was going to just have my son take one of his long & hot, steaming showers w/out the exhaust fan one day & then go at removing it. LOL Your tip sounds much better. :)

no steamer necessary :) 7|6|Are you supposed to wash the wall w/vinegar water before applying the new wallpaper?|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|13:05:17|10/11/2009|

Seems I read that somewhere once as it was supposed to help the pre-pasted adhere better? Or maybe I have that backwards & you'd want to use vinegar water to remove any left-over adhesive residue only if NOT re-applying wallpaper? I can't remember. LOL

8|7|i believe the vinegar is to remove the residue is not putting on new wallpaper|petunia1|sweetpea39@comcast.net|17:29:09|10/11/2009|

I use a wallpaper paste when I put new paper up to make sure it stays on, never had a problem when I do that.

I washed the walls down before putting primer on (to make sure the wallswere smooth) & then painted.
