You just never know what life is going to throw at you. Two years ago I was a stay at home mom, hubby was bringing home over $800 a week, we both always had some money in our pockets, could buy whatever we wanted at any time. We always had a 1/2 a cow and a 1/2 a pig in the freezer every year, shelves were stock piled with food so much that I shared with the neighbors for fear that we would not eat the stuff before expiration date. We went to movies, ate out a couple times a week, toilet paper and paper towels were stacked up in the basement, both vehicles were full of gas at all times. I was able to bid and win angle auctions with some of the bids being over $100, was happy to win them and to help someone else out. Now two years later, hubby has no job, no prospect of one yet, still waiting to hear from unemployment, I work a part time job that if I'am lucky brings in $350 a month. I ran out of paper products a month ago, down to a few canned and boxed food items that was given to me by a couple of generous RS members. Still haven't heard about food stamps, down to hardly any money, can't pay bills, have to decide if what money I have should go in the gas tank to get me to work or to use it for milk and bread. Soon I will be two months behind in all my utilities, won't have my car payment, can't afford to send anything to the doctors bills I owe so they will go into collections. Went the other day and we all got flu shots for free because we couldn't pay for them and I felt like the lowest human being on earth. When I told them we couldn't pay the people there acted like they never encountered someone not paying before. The woman where you pay she was all smiles when we walked up and when I told her we couldn't pay that was it, no smiling and she didn't even make eye contact with us. I don't know if she just thought we didn't want to pay or what but it was the strangest thing and it made me feel so low. But at least we got them and I am happy for that. I promised my daughter last month I would take her to see the play Little Red Riding Hood at the nature center this weekend, the tickets would cost $15 for the both of us, I managed to roll up $6 in pennies so we won't be able to go. I know that there are alot of people worse off then us but when you have never been in this situation before it is really hard. I know God will look out for us but I sure wish he could send some money and those food stamps my way soon, lol. :)

I have state sponsored insurance, it is a godsend.

My daughter gets free lunch at school(apply for your kids), in mystate, if you get food stamps, you get this instantly. Just need a letter from your social worker.

I am driving a 1992 maxima, that the drivers seat is tied down, because it broke. Back drivers side window, is all tape(it won't role up anymore). The power steering has leak, we have to keep filling the power steering fluid(can't afford to fix it. It has body rot. But it still runs, I am lucky. The police pull my us over all the time, and I swear it is because the car is beat up, so the assume, we are upto no good. I many occasions, they asked if had DRUGS, in the vechile.

I am on weekly payment plans with, gas company, electirc company, water company.

Have not been able to give my daughter a birthday party with her friends, in 3 years. Just never have the money. It bothers me most of all. Around here every kid gets the big away from home theme party. I am lucky if I can scrape the money up, to by a small gift so she can go to other parties.

Grechen, I can go on and on. I am a college graduste. I never thought something like this could happen to me. I feel for you. Try and think positive, pray, take advantage of any service available. If people look down on you, or snicker, because you are broke, and need these services. Don't be afraid to tell them who you are. I have done. Sorry, but just because I have hit hard times. Does not mean, I am not hard working, or uneducated. On a few occasions, I have said so.

I am hear for you. Email me, if you need to vent. DOnna

It's really hard! Especially when there is something that your kid wants and you can't do for them-- that has to be the worse feeling I can think of. I am just sorry that you are going through all of that worry and stress.

When did you apply for food stamps? Did they tell you how long it will take? That really varies from state to state depending on worker caseload, but honestly I can tell you from my own life experience that the squeaky wheel gets grease. You probably should call them and ask when and ask if they can process them any faster. They will likely say that they can't bump you up or anything, but by being a little noisy at least your application will not get "lost" in the shuffle. Seriously! Call and ask.

As far as the little play your daughter was looking forward to-- is this a city parks and rec event? Call and explain that you have a child who really wants to go and you are short on funds (embarrassing I know, but if you are on the phone at least they can't see you) and ask if they have any comp tickets for low income kids. It never EVER hurts to ask especially for our kids, because you would be surprised at what might be available just for the asking. Even if this is not a city event, call anyway!

You are in my prayers. It will get easier! Vanessa 9|2|we called unemployment and welfare today|crenchen|crenchen@aol.com|16:28:25|10/06/2009|

unemployment hasn't heard back from my husband's last job and welfare is pending and I am assuming it is because the same job did not send the paperwork in. Welfare has until 10/23 to let me know something so if it takes that much longer I don't know what to do. I am stretching everything now. 10|3|When it comes down to it your family comes before your pride hit the food banks and even if you have to the soup|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|16:37:23|10/06/2009|

I hope and pray that welfare and unemployment get their butts in gear and do something quick for you girlie. I can totally understand how you feel. We've been in the same situation for over 2 1/2 years and it is hard and very stressful. My hubby use to make 5k to 8k a month depending on overtime etc, and we had two vehicles, went out to eat, did alot of things with the kids etc, he took a pay cut when we moved to AZ in 2005, so that we could be closer to family (that sure didn't work out), although we still were able to do things etc, but then when he was struck with cancer, it all changed. We never had $ for anything and we even had our truck repossed, which really hurt because we only had about 9 payments left. FORD wouldn't let us defer any payments and we got behind so they came on a Sunday after church and took our truck. Luckily, our church sold us an old van they had for $1. It got us to chemo and other appts and we felt very blessed. It is still hard for us being on disability (esp with no health insurance) but I'm just thankful we have a roof over our heads and food on the table. I totally agree with Donna, try and think positive and hang in there, I know it's easier said than done, but hopefully things will turn around for you. I wish there was something I could do for you girlie, you're a nice person and it's hard to see a friend go through all of this. Hugs, Rebekka

in PA they give you food stamps right away

as for the FLU vaccines and not paying, hold your head up high. you did the right thing by getting everyone the shot and trying to stay healthy. Ignore the small minded person who gave you an attitude (may she never know what it feels like to be in your shoes)

I went to Giant Eagle to get bread, 3 loaves for $1, what a deal, catalina prints out a $3 coupon off a 4 pk. of Cottonelle. So, I'am thinking, wow this should make for some pretty cheap toilet paper. Come outside walking through the parking lot, putting receipt and coupon in my wallet, wind blows the receipt out of my hand and of course it is a very windy day so I stood there dumb founded watching blow through the parking lot, under the cars and got in a matter of seconds. I can laugh at it now but was pretty upset at the time :) 16|1|places|joseph|parkerjoe3@yahoo.com|23:27:47|10/08/2009|
