I write for just two places (mainly) right now. However, there are plenty of places you can write and earn money. Here's a few to consider:
Associated Content - I write here. I earn upfront for most articles though sometimes I get a zero offer. You earn page views, which for people starting out equals $1.50 per 1,000 views. Clout determines how much you make per 1,000, so it pays (literally) to get views. If you join, read all you can about SEO and choosing keywords, writing good titles, etc. (There is a link in the Workshop forum that is stickied toward the top.) If you decide to join AC and need some help with things, shoot me an email. Min word count for most things (excluding poetry, which generally doesn't get much views) is 400. Some assignments are less word count, though. They Pay PayPal.
Bukisa - I post a few things here, but don't really write much. They pay $3.45 per 1,000 views, but there's no upfront. Search engine placement wise, they aren't always toward the top, but hey, the views do add up. Also, the word count is substantially lower. A lot of people submit at AC for upfront, but not exclusive and then tweak or slightly re-write and post it on Bukisa to earn extra money off the same basic article. They Pay Paypal, but there's a minimum amount to be able to cash out.
Demand Studios - I don't write for them, but know many who do. This would be a good fit for most people who have a lot of experience in certain areas. I know of a retired NASA physicist who writes science stuff there. They pay more, but their guidelines are really strict.
Helium - I don't write here either, though many do.
Suite 101 - I don't write here, either.
Mahalo - I signed up to write here, but never followed through.

Textbroker - could be a good place to sign up, when they open back up for new writers. I've written a few things here - basically you read a "job" description and write what the customer wants. The pay is low, but if you can write a few things quickly, you can make out. Lots of writers use Textbroker for when they are between jobs. They pay Paypal and have a $10 min payout. They pay a few times a month, I think.

Writing ideas: Christmas gift guides (I know, but best to get these out early), Thanksgiving recipes (mixed in w/a memory or other useful info - such as I remember my grannie's special Christmas fudge.... then put the recipe in w/tips on how to get it to turn out kind of thing). Top 10 Christmas toys of all time, Top 10 Christmas Carols for Children... be very narrow in focus and use your keywords several times throughout (6 times at least in 400 words). Writing for web is different than writing for print. Newspapers get read by people - when you write online, you have to get people to find you and that means keywords. Think of how you would search for what you plan to write. What words would you use to find something on that topic?
