my husband lost his job yesturday and I am just beside myself. Our bills for the month are around $2,300 and that doesn't include food. I work partime and make around $300 to $400 a month and my father lives with us and has been paying our house payment which is over a thousand a month for us for the past year as my husband wasn't making enough to cover it and the rest of our bills. Does anyone know how long it takes for unemployement to kick in and since my father lives with us, has a little money in the bank would be qualify for food stamps? I have never applied before because I figured since he had money in the bank that we would not qualify but I will be going there today to see and to see if we can get any kind of medical for us or my daughter. Also any other suggestions on where and how to get food assistance or any kind of assistance? TIA for any help you guys can provide. I will be doing a garage sale next week to try and make a little money there. my husband was laid off on a wednesday and applied on a thursday and had found a job on his own before we were even called back (about 9 days later). my suggestion would be to file for unemployment but definately DON'T WAIT for it to kick in! he needs to hit the pavement RUNNING and see if he can get a job before the paperwork is even entered into the system. good luck to you! i'll be praying for you!

Here is how it works where I live :o)
Umemployement normally takes about a week depending on what day of the week he goes in.
Unemployement has nothing to do with anyone else in your household just the person filing for it.
Even if he starts getting unemployement his exemployer may contest it.(they get mailed the paperwork that he filed and has so many days to contest it.)
If contested they set up a "hearing" where both partys tell there side and those listening decide the outcome.
If the exemployer doesn't show up to the hearing they will dismiss the case BUT give the employer another 30days or so to REcontest it and state why they didn't show up the first time.. (yes they will get a second chance)
During all of that listed above (granted if it happens) you are suppose to be getting a check every week until the final word after the hearing..
So make sure IF the employer contests it that he is getting the check every week. call if not.
If he does find work again and its part time.. THen he will get partial unemployement still.
It is very important that he will call every week to file for benefits on the day scheduled!
Now as for foodstamps and other benefits...
Go for it.. Why not...
Go to your states website and you can look up all the info there...
I would try and file for everything you can to help out for the time being.
And if you go in person to the offices that can help with foodstamps and other things... ASK what else is there you qualify for.
Don't be embarrassed or have too much pride because Everyone is going through tough times right now...

Does your state have a medical program for children? Here in PA, we have CHIP for children which has pretty generous income limits.
Like Liz mentioned, if you go in to apply for foodstamps, ask them for other resources - pantries, emergency funds (here we have something called CEO which will sometimes pay for oil or a utility bill that's going to be shut off), etc.

to get the first unemployment check. The state gave us $800/mo food stamps which lasted 3 months, but then bumped it down to $360. My kids, who are in public school, got free lunch program, and as a family we got medical.
Here in CA, you can have a p/t job on unemployment but have to claim what you made, and anything over $25 is deducted out of your check.
Sorry this happened to you. We know what you're going through. We lost job, home, cars but we are getting by. Food stamps, unemployment is just enough without paying any rent. Now that we have to move out, it will be very short.

I'm not sure the age of ypur daughter but if she's under 5, you can apply for WIC. You can also call your churches to see if they have a food pantry. At least you'll be able to get some nonperishables in the house. I don't know your dad's situation and I know he's already helping out a great deal. I was thinking, maybe he could watch your daughter while you and hubby run around looking for work. maybe you can both consider doing a split shift for awhile until you get caught up on the bills. Coupon and rebate more of course. Buy all the freebies that are coming up at Walgreens 9/27

call whoever it is that you owe and make payment arrangements. they can NOT ruin your credit as long as you have an agreement with them to pay as little as $10 a month BUT you MUST pay it every month as agreed in order to keep your credit in good standing. (I wish I had known this last year when my husband got pneumonia (spelling?) as we used almost all of our savings paying the hospital and Dr bills and then found out later that we didn't HAVE to do that, we'd have done better to pay the cc bills in full. kwim? as for your car payment......... call the owner of the loan and see if you can get 1 or possibly even as many as 6 payments put on the BACK of the loan. now, please realize that you WILL accrue more interest this way and also that since you won't be making a payment for 1 - 6 months that your loan amount will NOT decrease. if you have any credit card debt call your creditors and ask if there is anyway to lower your interest rate or possibly your monthly minimum. do NOT agree to any "freebie months" unless you have in WRITING that they will not report to the credit bureaus that your payment is late. when doing this it is always better to offer to call to increase your payments when your husband gets another job AND THEN ACTUALLY DO IT. this will also help keep you in good standings with cc companies, loan officers, and medical billing companies as well.

I have to take a paper to my work to have filled out, 2 waivers have to be sent to my hubby's last two employers and when those are received back to them then I will receive a letter in the mail. My case worker said that we should receive some kind of food stamps and we should all receive medical until our situation changes. Of course who knows how long it will take for them to get the papers back as I can't even drop off the waivers and stuff until Monday because I have to turn in my husbands last paystub which he gets his check in the mail on Saturday. So I figure it will be 2 to 3 weeks until I hear or receive anything, so in the mean time I have to use what money we still have and have coming to keep up with the bills, so I'am not sure how I am going to obtain food in the mean time. We do have some meat in the freezer but running low on can and boxed items. I don't have really any good coupons to use to get free or really cheap stuff with doubles as I only have last weeks inserts. My neighbors have been giving us tomatos, squash and peppers out of their garden every few days so that helps. My other neighbor is struggling too so we our going to see about local food banks and churches, I think she has a list of places to go to. My husband filled out an app last night for a job and is waiting to hear back on that today as they had to run his license. Oh well, we will just have to struggle and make due until things get better. Now's the time I wish I would have alot of free item coupons set aside for a free spree. I don't even have any coming from rebates in the mail or any rebates at all as I haven't done to many lately. I did get a check today for $6.99 and $2.99 but those were the only ones I have coming. all paperwork is turned into Welfare just waiting for my job and hubby's last two jobs to send their paper work back, so hopefully I hear something by next week. Hubby got his last check Sat. and I used it to pay the car payment which was 18 days past due. We are down to $187 in our bank account. I have my car insurance to pay which will leave us about $40 after that. I am two weeks behind in my water payment, soon will be two months behind in my electric, I have the gas and cell phone bill to pay not to mention 3 high doctor bills to try and make arrangements on making payments to. Can't use any money for food as I have to keep it for gas money for the car. I don't get paid until next Friday which will probably be roughly around $135. I have rolled up my pennies, $6 worth to go and get milk and bread and some lunch meat today. The teachers at my daughters school are going on strike starting tomorrow, so no free breakfast or lunch for her until that situation changes. Hubby thinks we should keep her home so will have to try and come up with ideas for her breakfast and lunches. I am slacking off on what I eat and drink to make sure there is plenty for her. Don't get we wrong, we do have a freezer full of beef as we bought a 1/2 a cow back in July but am running low on the canned and boxed foods not to mention trying to come up with money for milk, bread, eggs and lunch meat. On a brighter note, Debbie who lives in Cleveland, I'am in Sheffield Lake, I can't remember her username on this board but it is DEO something but you will remember her because she just lost her husband a few months ago, anyway she contacted me the other day and has some canned goods that were bought for her husband and that she won't use, she was going to donate to Harvest for Hunger but she is going to bring them to my house tomorrow afternoon. I am looking forward to finally meeting her and if you are reading this Debbie I want you to know again how very much I appreciate you doing this for my family, I can't express in words what this means to us. So anyway that is what is going on here. I am going to try and start a goodie box sometime today when I have time to see what I have to put into one to try and make a little money. The weather here isn't going to be very good the next few days so probably won't be able to do a garage sale. and I haven't heard anything from Welfare about the food stamps or medical, how long does it usually take? All my paper work had to be turned in by yesturday and I turned all mine in. was told this morning that I would be receiving a letter because they need a paper notorized for hubby's last job, something from my work, which my CSM said she sent it but who knows if she did or not and hubby's check stubs for Sept. which I have already copied and taken to them but who knows why she doesn't have them. Sooooo, I only work one day next week (5 hrs) so maybe if I get everything there on Monday I might hear something by the end of the week. They sure make you jump through hoops, don't they?
One thing you should know is that if you have trouble getting them approved or if it keeps taking a really long time, you can ask for a hearing. They do not like hearings and I suspect that will speed them up quickly!
So, especially if you are repeatedly asked for the same proof of info, or are denied when you should not have been this info may help.

hopefully these last papers will be all they need, and she should have gotten the pay stubs as they were with my utility bills and she has those, only thing was I couldn't find one week in Sept. and I was thinking that he didn't get a pay that week as he was off a week before that with pneumonia, but even if I was wrong and there should have been a check stub they can see from the previous to the following exactly what he would have grossed for that week anyway, just something to prolong it for me.
