21 0|0|is anyone here doing the 1 year food storage (just in case somethings happens) ??????????????????|Basketcase|basketbubby@hotmail.com|14:34:41|09/09/2009|
I have seen where some people are storing so much food per person in case something happens, examples flu, loss of jobs, any kinda crisis
I was just wondering what people where doing.

6|2|We'd be fine....as long as we can learn to eat Chinet plates, Always pads, Dixie napkins, and wash it all down with shampoo, lol. Seriously, though, I've been more thought into this, I think the hardest thing to stockpile is bottled water, as it does expire after a few months...that would take more diligence in rotating it out and replacing it.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|20:10:05|09/09/2009|

11|4|Yeah, but I think we better stockpile some Exlax too...I can't imagine that paper plates and pads are very easily digested and eliminated, lololol.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:50:34|09/09/2009|

7|1|I have gotten started|Basketcase|basketbubby@hotmail.com|20:39:37|09/09/2009|
I have gotten started with alot of free item coupons this month
toothpaste

canned corn
and I am also having my husband make me so more shelves
8|1|the problem is a lot of stuff goes bad, stale, etc Stale is the worst. it's hard|jilda|vze4gj4m@verizon.net|21:43:06|09/09/2009|
to stockpile food. Now the other stuff? like Joy said..yeah we have a ton of everything else. :)
I even have 20 3.5 lb bags of purina one for my cats that I got for free. The cats are set..but us? not so much. LOL 10|2|Your family might have to learn to eat kitty kibble! LOL Yes, foods get stale (dry goods like rice, flour, etc), so the only thing you have longevity with is canned foods, which are not often cheap...a year's worth would set you back a bit as in investment, even with coupons....you'd need fruits and veggies, meats (tuna, chicken, etc), peanut butter (which has a relatively short shelf life), dry goods, water....|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:49:10|09/09/2009|

13|3|we have been for quite awhile:|aloha2u|alohamillion@yahoo.com|22:24:56|09/09/2009|
I try to do one years worth minimum for things...more if it is non perishable like H and B stuff.
Don't forget that you can store items like pancake mix, cake mix, noodles, rice etc in your freezer. I also like to substitute things if I can or adapt a recipe using what I have alot of. For example, I don't care for BC cookie mixes in the bags. So I have been making them as bars, which are fabulous, and thus getting eaten up. We make rice crispie treats using other types of cereals. We make our own trail mix/ snack mixes using various crackers/ dried fruit, etc.

If it's not used soon enough, it tends to get "cobwebby" w/funky bugs. :( I just had to toss about a 1/4 of a 4 lb. bag of Purina Beneful cuz it was getting funky. I have a little Chihuahua/Terrier so she doesn't eat even a 4 lb. bag fast enough. But it's about the only kind of dogfood she can eat & doesn't get sick from so even most canned dog food isn't an option.
As for flour, rice, sugar, spices & other types of dried goods (including boxed cake & muffin mix, uncooked pasta, jello, pudding mix, mac & cheese, Hamburger Helper, coffee, etc.), you can freeze them for longer life. I always put stuff like that in the freezer right after I buy it anyway as it extends its shelf life & reduces any risk of bugs or worms developing. I usually leave in the freezer overnight, but I think 4 hrs. is sufficient, just so the stuff gets the "deep freeze" zap. ;)

17|3|hmmmmmmmmmmmm, never heard of this before. so you freeze it for a night and it kills anything that might be "lurking"?|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|08:05:05|09/10/2009|
never ever thought of that before!

18|4|Yup.|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|08:42:07|09/10/2009|
Dried goods that you may not eat/use very often will last longer if put in the freezer for a few hrs. before putting in your cupboards. But if you want to stockpile & not have to worry about dried goods getting funky/buggy, keep them in the freezer for as long as you like or til around the time you're going to use. Boxes of cereal, oatmeal, malt-o-meal, cream of wheat, crackers, cookies, nuts also - just about ANY dried goods.
Actually, I keep the flour in my freezer all the time. I buy the re-sealable bags of flour but since I don't use it that often, I keep the bag in the freezer & just take out the amount I need when I need it, re-sealing & returning the bag to the freezer. It lasts me many months that way w/NO worries about bugs. :)
Meats like hamburger also last alot longer if cooked up thoroughly, lightly drained, cooled for a few minutes & then stored in the freezer. Just take out the amount you need, thaw & use.

I will have to thaw out some chicken breast and hamburger- cook it up and refreeze. Quick meals =)
Thanks for the tip!

20|1|anyone else have any great storage tips|Basketcase|basketbubby@hotmail.com|13:41:22|09/12/2009|
thanks 21|2|if you have a lot of zippy bags but not a lot of space to store them...........|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|17:18:42|09/12/2009|
take them out of the box and place inside another zippy bag. ie: if you have 10 boxes of sandwich sized bags take them out of their boxes and place them in a quart sized bag then i label the bag sandwich baggies. the quart sized ones i put in a gallon sized bag and label it quart baggies. the gallon size i just leave in their boxes and the snack size i put into sandwich sized bags. This also helps keep the lil moths away as they won't be able to utilize the boxes as hidding places for their cocoons. hths :)
