I have a 9 year old. He was getting $3.00 for making sure the trash went out each week. But he seems to have ditched the job and I get tired of being on his back so we are now doing it. They only pick up once a week so if we dont do it I have trash a whole nother week hanging around.

Looking for some suggestion on what you think a 9 yr old can do and how much they should get. I thought I'd do a chart and whatever he did do he would get paid only for those jobs.

Any ideas??

Why would he have a choice? It's why they call it a chore! Later in life they call it a job. 3|2|good point|prestonmom|prestonmom@yahoo.com|14:04:07|08/24/2009|

I'm still whinning about chores!
Maybe he will get lucky and find a wife who likes taking out the garbage.....but I doubt it. Sadly it's one of those male things he's just going to man up to. 15 min of HIS time will not harm him. Otherwise YOU are going to end up doing it! Don't you already do enough now? 4|1|Stop giving him his allowance. No one pays me to wash laundry, cook, or anything else here in the house. We all work as a family to keep house clean. Yes, I pay extra for extra work but trust me my kid WORKS for his extra cash.

Part of being a family is being a team and working together. 9|1|No paying for chores here either...|KellyJef|burke3536@yahoo.com|21:31:04|08/24/2009|

I would never pay kids to take out the garbage.

10|1|I don't pay my boys for chores now, they are 15....but back when they were smaller like the OP's son's age, I paid them a few dollars a week for routine chores to teach them about earning money and how to save some/spend some...but if they didnt do the agreed upon chores, they didnt get the money.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:41:51|08/24/2009|

ETA: Just like in the real world, if you dont do the work you dont get paid....in fact, if I had to do the chore myself that they were being paid to do, I charged them for my labor. (aren't I awful???) They got the lesson real quick! LOL

he's so used to mom and dad being able to just buy him things, he didn't understand that we have to MAKE the money to buy them so we inducted the allowance. since we started this he's failed to do his chores as asked about 4 times and he's lost his money because of it. just because he lost his allowance doesn't mean he didn't do the chores it's just that he didn't do them when prompted, just like a real job. oh, and you can bet your bottom dollar he still gets them done, he's just not rewarded for it. :)

sometimes one way of motivation gets old and you have to change it. My kids have always had a list of family chores they do just because they are part of the family. If they don't do those jobs, there is no tv, games ect, until they are done.

Then they have another list, those are extra jobs that I would normally do, and they are for allowance. With my youngest, she gets 5.00 a week if she completes all those jobs. Sometimes in the past with my older kids there was a list put up on Saturdays, each job was worth a certain amount and they could pick and chose which of those jobs they wanted to do. They could either get paid money for them, or computer time. I found my boys to often be much more motivated by computer time.

Think people maybe taking this wrong. My son has chores which he does most of the time he doesn't even have to be reminded. He does put his clothes away, cleans his room and the basement. He really doesn't ask for much.

I was trying to come up with some jobs and some prices because he doesn't seem to like taking out the trash, so I thought I would pick up some other options and amounts from others. Just thought I'd get an idea if him cleaning the bathrooms were too much to ask and how much I should be making it worth.

We are going to Disney this year and thought some earned money to take would be a good idea. The kid would like a job but that isn't something he can do at this age.

do you have cats or dogs? can he help feed them and take care of them for maybe an extra $1 a week if he helps 5 times a week? how about washing the vehicles for an extra $2 per vehicle twice a month? cleaning the bathroom............ i'd give $1 for that. how about helping to wash the dishes? even if it's just the plastic ones 5 times a week for an extra $1 a week. you could also "trade" jobs.... say his fav restaurant is olive garden or mcdonalds, you could trade work he does around the house for 1 meal at his fav restaurant while you are on vacation. or you could trade jobs he does for a mickey mouse ice cream at disney. just a few ideas. hth :)
