We're saying our goodbyes to him today. I couldnt take him today, I needed to be able to spoil him one last time.
He has been going steadily downhill the last several months, and the last couple days can hardly stand without losing his balance and his legs giving out under him. I've carried him out to the yard, up and down 12 deck steps...he weighs 80bls. I said months ago to my DH, I didnt know how much time we would have left with him, but if he is suffering I'd let him go to give him peace. Today he is trembling and whining, panting and pacing. I know he must be in pain....he has hardly eaten and this dog relishes every scrap of food or treats he gets. He has been lying around for hours at a time, and didnt even bark when someone came to the door yesterday afternoon, which he always does. I sit on the floor with him and he puts his head in my lap, looking up at me with his eyes full of worry and pain.
We adopted him as a retired racehound when my boys were 7. He has been one of the best dogs we could ever hope for....patient temperment, always forgiving of our stupid human natures, and loves us all unconditionally...I'll miss his howling for me when I go downstairs to do the laundry...I'll miss his following me step for step in the kitchen while I'm cooking, hoping I drop a scrap of something he can snag off the floor....I'll miss his goofy, toothy 'smile' he puts on when he's exceptionally happy....I'll miss his velvety soft ears, one jet black, and one snow white... So many things that I'll miss. He has been my baby for 9 years, so I'll just miss him so much. He doesnt deserve to suffer in this pain and misery, although if I could, I'd keep him here with us for longer.
I know so many of us have had to give up our furry babies over the years, I've had to do it twice already (I guess that's the price to pay for adopting older dogs, but it's one I gladly pay for the years we've been able to give the dogs a loving home). But it sure doesnt get any easier, does it?

My Lab is slightly older and has been on this med for a couple of years now. It works VERY well for her.
Sorry to hear that it is bone cancer. I didn't know about the connection with grayhounds. One learns something new everyday. I always did wish I knew someone who had a sight dog. The rabbits who eat my garden every spring would no longer be an issue.
This is no easy decision for anyone to make. My thought and tears for you!

I lost my dog when I lived at home with my parents, and have not gotten another one since. (that has been 18+ years now)
It is so very hard.

I read your post with my furboy kitty Giovanni in his favor office position -- between me and the keyboard. I have to type over him. I had my chin resting on his back and as the tears flowed he turned his head around and gave a little kitty grunt. I started to pat his kitty hands and he put on hand on top of my hand and did his funny little bird chirpy noise as if he was asking me what was wrong. So I read the post to him (yeah, I know... crazy). He was looking at the screen as if he was reading along with me and continued to make little kitty noises. When I was done, I told him that this doggy was so lucky cuz he had a family who loved him as much as we love Gio and Gio put one kitty hand on my cheek as if to stop the tear. It was so touching. I mean, it's like he really really knew what I was telling him and he understood it and felt the pain of a pet leaving his human. They really are just people in fur coats. Only they give love unconditionally and continually.

The peace that came over him was a relief to us, and to him...he lay with me cradling his head and rubbing his pink belly (always his favorite form of affection)...closed his eyes peacefully and drifted away. I know he's in a better place free of pain and fear, and I know Mama J's son, Joey, has him safely in his care now. (Hey, Joey, if you talk silly baby talk to him, he'll give you one of those goofy grins....)
My family and I all thank you so much for the prayers, supportive words, and love....we were stronger for that, and are grateful beyond words. I hope to give the same support and love to any of you that need it when/if the time comes for you to lose your beloved furry baby.

not sure if I told you this or not..but you know how we have 'others'here at our house :) Anyhoo..right after our miss kitty passed (we had to put her down..purina pet food poisoning)it was broad daylight here..middle of the day. My friend and her daughter were here and they and myself were standing just before the doorway into the kitchen from the middle room. All of a sudden we ALL heard Miss Kitty's bell collar jingle..my friends jerked around and stared at the same place ..then turned back to me and said EXCLAIMING "Did you hear that?!!? Yep..sure did! Miss kitty's bell sound was over by the couch..right where she would lay on my side at night on weekends..her favorite place. :)
When we had Odie..our dog for a short while..he was ill when we got him..passed during the night..both hubby and I heard him several times during the next morning in the early hours. Hubby just would look at me increduously when he heard it. Also after our Basset Hound Frieda passed (had to put her down due to cancer) we also heard her for a short time in the house as well.
My night nurse and her hubby still hear their kitty which they had for many years (had to be put down) as well, off and on in their house. Can hear it's little nails as it walks across the floor at their house and they occasionally hear it meow as well.
Anyhoo...my point is I am sure your beloved pet is still around you..at least for awhile. They want to make sure you are OK with their moving on to another place and they try to comfort you. I hope you find some comfort in knowing that and just wanted to share.
