I know this is a strange ??? but does anyone know a family that is really in need. We saw a special on dateline that had these 2 kids from Kansas that talked about how they go to bed hungry most nights and some nights have a potato. It really hit home on how fortunate we and most people are. the sad part is "who knows these people". we all know families (& ourselves) that go through hard times but I am talking about people who have nothing to eat, clothes to wear, etc...

if you know someone that is this desperately in need please email me the info. 1|1|U know what burns my biscuits over these situations? .....|Skaytes|skaytez@gmail.com|21:53:49|07/06/2009|

Reeallly makes me madder than all get out. Our country cannot find the funds for food, shelter, meds etc for our people, but in a HEARTBEAT will suddenly be able to find MILLIONS (if not billions) to send to other countries for THEIR peoples aid! Grrrrr! Not that those people don't need or deserve help, but they need to help their own right here in the U.S that are starving, dying due to lack of meds/medical care and so forth. Even 'celebrities' send their fund raiser funds to/for other countries..what about OUR country and those HERE who need help like this?!

Sorry..just HAD to vent on that. Horrible, horrible situation for people but also think it will get worse. What is going to happen to the people when their unemployment runs out and they still can't find a job? Sad, sad, sad.... 2|2|I agree with you 100%|petunia1|sweetpea39@comcast.net|22:08:20|07/06/2009|

we have starving children right here in the US. we us to do "feed the homeless" in philly (I live close to philly) but we are not allowed to do that anymore. they do not want people handing out food on the streets or at bridges because they are afraid for their safety. it really bothers me that a child is going to bed hungry!!! especially when I can help. we are not wealthy but we are blessed and I know others out there feel the same way.

hard part is finding out who are the kids that need our help??? 3|1|Check w/your church or your local salvation army......|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|22:44:21|07/06/2009|

Churches usually know of families who could use a "sponsor" for help & some salvation armies allow people to "adopt" a family throughout the year, not just at Christmas. If you have a Goodwill in your area, they may also know of someone who could use a little help. HTH. :)

4|2|I was so upset around the holidays, this past year. After Christmas, a friend of mine told me how her son and daughter inlaw, who make 80,000 a year between the two of the, went to a program for needy children, and got 2 $250 gift cards to walmart, to buy christmas presents for their children. ECUSE ME??? But that made my blood boil. First, because I didn't know the program was availabe. Could have used it desperately, and secondly because I made 20,000 last year. I recently had some stockpiles that I gave to a shelter for women/children who I thought really needed food in their central pantry. As the volunteer was receiving it, moms were coming into the kitchen and looking at some of what I donated. Several of the moms were turning up their noses or making comments about not liking what was in the bags... and they had to know that they were from me as I was making my last trip from the car with bags in hand.

I am leery about donating cash to any organization. There is a really good group of Lions in the next town, though, and I do give them grocery store gift cards when I can afford to do so; they give food baskets at the holidays by asking local churches for names of folks in need... not just people from the churches. And they go to social services I think, too, to get an idea of who needs help.

I think that sometimes people who really need help are afraid or too proud to ask. So for the OP, what a kind guesture to extend an offer and I hope you find people who are truly in need and appreciative of your help :)

I work at a school and I see alot of this going on. People lie on there apps and most of the time there is no request on alot of forms requiring proof of your income. I know that for a fact with the free/reduced lunch program all you have to do is write down whatever you want and they ask for no proof.

I know before I went to work at the school I was a manager at a convenient store called Sheetz and every year they did a sheetz family christmas with the salvation army and they picked kids out of the community and took them shopping and if we knew the families didnt have a washer or dryer sheetz would buy them what they needed but alot of the kids did need this but there were alot of kids that dont need this because i would see parents dropping there kids off to the shopping area in fancy cars, wearing fancy clothes and having there nails done. now dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with this when you can afford but if your turning to salvation army and a community program to help your kids at christmas i dont think you can afford that and its the same way with the lunch program at school..i know people that have lied on that and when i call our food service and tell them or question they say well we will look into it and if we find it true they are lying we will audit them well these people have never been audited.

this is where the system fails the people that really need the government programs. My dad is very sick with enphazyme and has had to retire and my mom is trying to work and you know they dont get any help from our state. my dad gets his social security but he worked his whole life and that is a priviledge i feel her earned but help with meds or anything else when they apply for help they are turned down because my mom makes to much or so the system says.

this whole subject gets my blood boiling i know of soo many times the system has failed people or organizations have failed people that really needed them.

let me shut my mouth now :)

If we truely give from the heart than it is a gift of sharing. I feel badly Shel that the women in the shelter turned their nose at what you were giving but I will bet there are poeple where who were very grateful for what you gave and that is what you need to focus on. Schools are not allowed to give out families names but I did help out my friends daughter when she taught in an elementry school. the kids came to school hungry so she would keep juice boxes and snacks for them. she is off now so I no longer have that option.

I have seen people with $$ take advantage of the situation, the biggest problem seems to be at Christmas. It is so hard for agencies to truely know who is needy. they just do not have the resources to check into everything so unfortunately people slip through. that is why I do the "angel" thing on the board. it is friends we know that we are helping.

I am being careful and trying to find a family that needs help, parents are working and still not getting by. not the people who spend $20 A day on cigs and then say they have no $$ for food. Seen that too! I was just hoping someone knew a family like this. most of the people I know are in programs or getting help. I may try contacting the food shelter inour town. I used to work with them in a soup kitchen and I would think they could guide me somehow. usually they wwant just general donations to the panty.

There are sensitive ways to getting the help to children. The important thing for most of us is that the need is real and the schools are the best place to find a way to make a difference in a child's life

Schools can not give out info on students/families that have asked for assitance. There should be a paper kept within the school that has been filled out by families that are willing to accept help from the school but all of that info is kept confidential and when they schools have like the back pack drives, or clothing drives or food drives these papers are then pulled and these families get first go at the items that were collected.

As far as the school free/reduced lunch program we dont require proof of the income there is a place where you list your income but we do not require anything proof of that. reduced lunch is 40 cents per day and that does include a milk like someone else had previously stated also if you have all day kindergarten and your child attends and they do a snack or milk and its provided by the school cafeteria most likely you are charged a fee..you can fill out the free/reduced form for that also and if you qualify you dont have to pay the fee.

Call your local sheriff's office I bet they will tell you about a family or introduce you to a family that is in need. I know my brother is a cop and he said they went to a mans travel trailer because they couldnt believe someone could live in this thing by the condition of it and when they entered the property they were all amazed at the living conditions when they called adult protective services they were told that there was nothing they could do because they had no more funding so my brother and some of the other officers put this guy up in a motel for a few days until the could find some of his family to take him. so check with your sheriff's office they might beable to give you a family that needs help.

I always try to give to the different things we have at school and i usually no the families that need additional help or would like additional help its so hard to see kids struggle through tough times its very sad when you see the same child day after day dirty or dirty clothes or just one little thing in there lunch box because there parents are to proud to sign up for the free lunch program and to know that this program is open to everyone to sign up for it just matters if your free or reduced or denied its a federally funded program its a great program i encourage everyone to sign up for it.

with this program the other kids dont know what child is on this program.

ok enough blabbing from me this time

Hugs (first of all) I knew what you meant in your post. I think it was a thoughtful and good idea.

I agree, people are proud and I want to be careful of that. seems the people who need help the most will not ask for it and the 80 grand a year are the first to show up for the gift cards. but it is frustrating to see kids going hungry because of this. I think it would have to be handled in a gentle matter depending on the situation.

It is hard to explain but I feel the time for me to help these children is here, right now. due to some changes in my own work schedule and life in general I have been looking into some new options in life. one is my work with breast cancer and the other is hungry children and families.

My husband told me that the families I am looking for live in the back woods somewhere and almost impossible to know or find. every child deserves happiness and good health. I just thought someone on the board might know of a family.

there will always be those who deliberately take advantage, and God help them when they REALLY need help. I truly believe that the vast majority getting help, DO need it. Especially in these hard times. If there is a Children's Aid Society in your community, ask a social worker if he/she knows of a family that is REALLY struggling. Sometimes people are in desperate need, but they fall through the cracks, because it is a short-term need caused by illness/injury etc

Just don't stop wanting to help: it is your heartfelt caring and generosity that makes you a very special person.

hats and put them aside for the next school year to donate. Dollar General usually marks them way down and I just buy the entire lot that is marked down. I had the office gal at the elementary school tell me "you don't truly know how many kids come to school with no mittens/gloves, hat or even coats as their family just can't afford it." so I know I am helping some families out with that.

I have given to the local food bank in the past but with my own grown kids struggling now, I am giving my stockpiles to them as they truly need it themselves but if our church would refer someone that needs help, I certainly (as just like in the past) would jump right in and go thru my stockpilied foods etc here to help them out. Everyone needs a helping hand here and there..I know I sure did at different points in my life and if not for someone helping me, I don't know what I would have done.

God Bless everyone who helps those in need however they help out being it with cash, food, clothes..whatever. You are all 'Angels'!! 19|1|a lady i know used loads of coupons to get stockpiles (m) |lydzkydz|lydzmcss@yahoo.com|22:02:07|07/07/2009|

I am very active in several organizations/ ministries, and have had the best of luck finding homes for the things I need to find a home for. For example, someone donated to me a bunch of cheap Keds sneakers from Dollar General store that were NWT but cheap and dated...I mentioned having these shoes to tons of people and finally one day a lady said she knew the perfect place for them. Several retired folks collect and travel to southern Tx each year and fill their campers w/ good shoes and other stuff to give to a Christian mission in Mexico. Boy, I loaded up all the stuff I could spare and they took it down for me. So, ask around to see what resources you can come up with...and don't be shy about voicing your preferences on who receives your gift =)

I also very actively participate with Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes- great place to send your extra hygiene items to. You can either do shoeboxes, or look on their website for your local church drop off area as they probably will accept items so they can fill boxes. I love LOVE this ministry, so please ask if you have any questions!

Also, remember you can reach out to forgotten soldiers- lots of sites to include: any soldier dot com, books for soldiers dot com----(not just books). You could try your local Veterans Home for many items including gently used stuff- games/ videos/ books/ stationary/ hygiene stuff/ clothing, etc etc. Local nursing homes often have 'forgotten' seniors that may not NEED anything but would certainly appreciate any extra 'treats' or just the thought that someone thought of him/ her. And finally, depending on your stockpile, you could also call your local Habitat for Humanity and donate food for worker lunches or maybe make a WELCOME HOME stockpile box for a new family.

I personally enjoy helping out those who are helping themselves. I am certain you will find a recipient for your gifts with a bit of thought and prayer.

Good luck!
Stacey =) 21|3|thanks for the tips, did many of these thoughout the years|petunia1|sweetpea39@comcast.net|09:47:58|07/08/2009|

I was the youth group leader and we did many of these activities throughout the years. our church rotates a different place monthly but the new priest changed things so makes it harder to collect for these places. I send to soldiers as I find someone who has a friends, family memebr, etc... I send a nice box and have them share with their group.

It got harder donating food because of the lack of coupons. people will save the inserts for a week or so then dont bother anymore. I did well for a few weeks but guess I'll have to start buying 10 papers to get more inserts.
