I dont have any advice with the VA issue, I have no experience with that, but I would imagine there are a good number of lawyers with will give you an initial consultation for free (I have had that experience with both divorce and child support/visitation issues). I am curious though if by skilled nursing facility, do you mean a nursing home? I have been a long-term ('nursing home') nurse for my entire career of 16 yrs, and it saddens me that they put the mentally ill in facilities for the aged, but that is another issue and I digress.
I'll be praying for your parents, especially for your mom as she has her surgery and recovery...pls let us know how she does and if you would like for us to do a card shower for her. I'd be glad to head that up. :)

for the loss you are feeling. I a sure the kids are going through that loss too.
My stepsister went into a nursing home at a very young age because of mental illness. It used to be that some nursing homes had an area for those with mental illness that were younger. She was there for many year before she was able to cope with the outside world and was moved to a group home.
I pray that he gets the help he needs, and you and the kids recieve the healing that you deserve.

I understand his need for medical care & the high costs associated w/it but I don't understand how they justify taking all his income when he has a wife & children. :( Please do seek legal advice cuz it just doesn't seem right.
It's normal to go thru a grieving process when a marriage ends because you've loved that person & had built a life w/him. When we fall in love & marry, we expect it to last forever so it's only natural to grieve when the life of that relationship/partnership comes to an end.
I'm sorry you're going thru so much.

What I can suggest is that you contact your local VFW/American Legion and see if there is anyone there who can help you navigate through this bureaucratic mess. They can at least point you in the right direction. I can understand the seizure of funds to pay for his care... but it really is unfair that you now suffer financially as well. I would think that your children would be entitled to some kind of money set aside for them each month out of his benefits.

Thanks everyone. I am quite overwhelmed with a lot right now. I need to give a BIG BIG thank you to Jodie and Kristy who've been there for me and have been keeping in contact with me -- they will never know how much their IMs and calls have helped. My parents', rightfully so, are so focused on my mom's upcoming surgery, that they're kind of limited in what support they can offer. I really, really wish I could have my sister back these days....I have never missed her as much as I do now.
From talking to my dad the other day, it just doesn't look too good for my mom longterm. After the surgery, they will not be treating her with chemo or radiation because, as the doctor said, "if it didn't work the first time, it won't work this time" or something to that effect. And because it came back so quickly, that means it's pretty aggressive. They still don't even know what the thing is in her thyroid for sure....they pretty much ruled out that it's related to the breast cancer, but they won't know for sure until they remove it (a couple of months down the road).
Her surgery is next week, so please pray for her....she seems to have it in her mind that she's not going to even make it through the surgery.
