Got it at a garage sale for $10 a couple yrs. ago. HP no longer makes them tho as there was some kind of defect w/the cartridge carriers in certain batches of them, so it was hit/miss if you got a bad one or not. Fortunately, this 2nd one has been a hit. ;) I had another 3820 prior to this one that I'd bought new & it did go kaput after about a year. Probably the 1 time HP made a serious "oops" in their printers. The ink cost about $34.99 for black & $38.99 for color at Walmart but it lasts & lasts forever, & I print ALOT. Walmart no longer carries these cartridges tho so I shopped around & found I could get the OfficeMax brand for about $10 less.
My son uses an HP deskjet D1320. The ink is about $14.99 for black & $17.99 for color. Their smaller in size but also seem to last quite awhile. I'd bought it new & used it myself for awhile after my 1st 3820 went kaput, & really liked it. When I found this 2nd 3820 at the garage sale, I gave the 1320 to my son.
I'm a diehard fan of HP printers, scanners & copiers. I had a Canon printer once but hated it as the ink didn't last very long & would very easily dry up. The print-head also went bad almost immediately & Canon wanted $50 to replace it - more than the printer was even worth. :( The reason I'm a big HP printer fan is because the ink lasts a long time & I've never had a problem w/it drying up, even w/an old 693C that sat for about a year w/NO use! LOL The reason most of HP's ink cartridges are so pricey is because they have built-in print-heads so you're getting a new print-head everytime you replace an ink cartridge, which is also why there's never a problem w/the ink drying up.
Not sure if my rambles (LOL) here are of much help to you, but wanted to share & explain my experiences. ;)

2|2|I have an HP all-in-one now...I agree that in years past, HP was the way to go....never had an ink guzzling HP before, but I think the newer stuff is not up to par with what I used to be able to count on from HP....And the inks are a bit pricey for as little as they last, costs me $35 for a black/color combo pack, but they have only lasted an average of 2-3 months at best. I used to only have to buy ink maybe twice a year with my older HP printers. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|09:21:53|06/28/2009|

I'm just guessing & maybe it's the "new wave" but I'm hoping I'm wrong cuz yea, I only have to buy ink cartridges for my printer maybe twice a year if that. On average I'd say ink lasts me anywhere from 9 mos. to 13-14 mos. All my hardware is stand alone hardware so my printer, scanner & copier are all individually separate from each other....

4|4|No, I dont think so....I very rarely use the scanner or copier options.....mostly just printing lists, coupons, forms, etc....I print address labels and trade slips every couple months, but will use a graphic without alot of dense coverage to save ink....I think the amount of ink in the cartridges is less than previous models I've used, I dont know....but I have my printer settings to print moderate quality (unless I do print a photo, then I might up the quality a bit) to save ink too...was hoping there is a newer model out there that is decent on ink usage.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|10:24:22|06/28/2009|

seems to be a lot like the lexmark printer i used to own, you run out of blue and you have to trash the entire color cartridge and get a new one. that's why i got the canon because it has separate cartridges.... 2 black, one red, one blue and one yellow. i only buy the color i need.

also i noticed the prices aren't that low...... $89 - $250 ont eh walmart site.

i'd definatly be checking around for better prices. jmho

A few years back we bought a Epson Stylus Photo RX600 and it seemed like if we printed a few times, then the ink would say it was low. When I take the cartridge out, you can shake the cartridge and still hear that it has ink in it. My BL told us about a charger that re-charges your cartridges. I purchased one off ebay and when my low light comes on, I just recharge mark the top of the cartridge so next time I know it is really out. I have saved so much doing this.
Might be something to check out. Sorry, I don't know the "offical" name for this thing

Lisa 24|5|Yeah, I ignore the indicator displays and just use the cartridge til the print is too faded....so if it's not empty, it's clogging up, which is just as costly.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|12:06:27|06/28/2009|

The ink is so reasonable priced & it goes a long long ways. Daughter uses it all the time for scrapbooking pictures & she does a ton of them before the ink gets low. I've had it a year & have replaced ink once in all that time. I can replace both cartridges for half of what one of my last cartridges cost.

I have an HP that uses toner (just B&W) which I have had for almost 9 years! It still runs and prints like a champ! Just checked and to date I've printed 23,400 sheets since I first plugged it in. I date my toner cartridges and put the sheet count on it when I "install" it. I just checked and it's been in there 16 months and printed 5473 sheets and it's still going strong. This reminds me I'll have to buy a new one soon (I always have a back-up but I have to start a coupon hunt before I buy.) With a coupon (at one of the 3 office supply stores) I can get a high capacity HP branded cartridge for about $70. I could get a refill or a store branded (also refilled) for less but have always had great luck with the OEM so for me it's worth the extra few bucks.

If I need color I use my parents printer (they also have an HP which I recommended to them and they love it). Mom gets her ink refills at Walgreens when they have a sale ($5 or $10) and ever now and then she buys new carts from BJ's. I don't recall how much they are there but I know they are cheaper than the office supply stores.
