My husband overflowed the toilet on the second floor, and since he's in his own little world most of the time, he didn't even realize it and let it sit for a few hours (it was at night).

Anyone know if this means my floorboards are gonna be shot? The tiles are already starting to curl, but I'm wondering what's up with the boards underneath (the tiles are at least 50 years old, so I'm not too worried about those. Any advice on what to do to minimize the damage?

lauren 1|1|I dont know if you'd have to replace the flooring underneath....pull up the wet tile and let it dry really well...see how it looks then....we had a slow leak from our tank on the toilet a couple years ago, now that ruined the flooring underneath, but it was exposed to water over time constantly.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|13:56:26|06/09/2009|

"Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy." 2|2|Good idea Joy...looks like the tile is shot anyways, so that's probably the thing to do|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|14:27:01|06/09/2009|

lauren 3|3|Yeah, cuz it's no fun replacing the underflooring, let me tell ya! LOL You have to reset the toilet, sink/vanity, etc....it's a chore! (Especially since it was our only bathroom at the time!)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|14:28:14|06/09/2009|

Kristy, I checked the stain in the ceiling and it's not mushy at all or wet, so that must be previous damage. Now time to pull up the tiles.

lauren 5|2|You can use Iron Out on the ceiling stain. Awesome stuff!|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|19:04:27|06/09/2009|

It turns rust/water stains into a clear liquid & rinses away w/the rinse water. I've used it w/a toothbrush, putting some of the Iron Out powder into a separate "throw-away" container & dipped a damp toothbrush into it, then applying it directly to the stain & rubbing it in a little. Rinse w/clean water.
As for the floor boards, after you've pulled up the tile, you can use bleach (Clorox) water: 1 part bleach to 3-4 parts water. Use an old raggy cloth & wipe the bleach water over the entire area that got wet. Dry completely w/a fan or elect. heater. This will inhibit any potential mold growth if you don't have to replace the floor boards. ;)

I've heard of Kilz and stuff, but not that.

lauren 7|4|It also works wonders on white clothes, rusty chrome (bikes, car bumpers, etc.).....|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|19:30:39|06/09/2009|

hard water stains in toilets, sinks, bathtubs. It's like a milder form of bleaching agent except it also gets out rust/water stains. Just don't inhale the powder dust/fumes cuz it stinks. LOL
Kilz works good but is more suited to keep any mold from seeping thru paint, wallpaper, etc. I prefer to use bleach water on a surface 1st tho as it removes any current mold & keeps it from even developing or getting worse. Once the surface is completely dry, then the Kilz is able to do its job better.
