Whatever you decide to do, I would recommend you choose a color palette that is soothing and relaxing so that you feel relaxed in the room where you sleep. That was my priority when I decorated our new bedroom when we added on a few years ago....I chose a light sage green, accented with white as the secondary color, and a touch of a deep golden yellow in the bedding. The decor is West Indies style and the only dark things in the room is the dressers and the bed frame. Large real plants add decor, a sense of nature and calmness...I have several large palms and tropical type plants in my room, very soothing, and they add oxygen to the room. :) I would recommend you add at least one live plant to your room.

Also, I think a room actually turns out better if you take your time choosing items to put in it...sometimes you'll have something specific in mind to add, and sometimes something just jumps out at you when you arent looking, lol. Some of my favorite things are old items repurposed....for example, for wall art in my living room, I used some fabric peices I had left over and stored away. I wrapped the fabric around a large canvas (maybe 3 ft by 4 ft)and stapled it on the back of the frame. I have 3 large canvases covered with three different, but complementary, fabrics that hang on the main wall. I get more compliments on those than anything in the room, and they cost me very little (I had the canvases also, I had painted some abstract art for the room but got bored with them after a couple years). Cutting cost is easy when you redo or repurpose something with just a little work and minor supplies. We took the old bathroom medicine cabinet and sink cabinet when we redid our main bathroom, and painted them deep chocolate brown for our new bathroom we are building downstairs...they look completely different with the paint and some new hardware (cheap fix!). Painting, recovering, restructuring items...all cheap and easy. :) For a bedside table, look around your house and see if there is another peice you can use and repurpose....maybe paint it or embellish is a bit with decals, new knobs, etc. Look at garage sales, resale shops like Good Will, etc for items that might work with your room, either as-is or with some personal touches.

For window dressings, try keeping it open, airy, and simple....just put up blinds (horizontal blinds are inexpensive)for privacy, then buy inexpensive twin flat sheets, or even a shower curtain, cut them to fit and re-hem if needed. Drape them lengthwise across the top with window scarf hardware (or use something inexpensive like small shelf L-brackets screwed into the wall just a couple inches from the outside edges of the window and at the top edge). You can loop the material over at the brackets to hide them, then let the material flow down. Very feminine, simple and pretty.

Bedding might be the only big-ticket item you would have to buy....and even that can be done in stages. Buy the comforter/spread and some nice shams first to go with your rooms' decor. Get the sheets later, no one will see them when your bed is made anyway. Add a couple throw pillows later on after that. Also, if you have throw pillows already, repurpose those! Find some inexpensive material to recover them in to save money.

I have a couple tv shows I watch on HGTV....Design on a Dime is a great show to watch for ideas on reusing items or inexpensive fixes for a room. I love that show, get lots of ideas I would love to try sometime!
These are just some thoughts I'm throwing out there...if you have any other questions or if I can help further, pls lmk :)

a comforter cover out of flat sheets, so your room will all match. You can take a old lamp shade and cover it with fabric too...Lots of great prints are offered in sheets and i've seen some wonderful butterfly prints available in sheets. I made my ds some curtains for christmas out of sheets, found a batman vintage print from 1991 that is no longet printed, they came out cute and he loves them...very unique..

7|5|I have also used the pillow covers (not the cases) for curtains that come with when you buy|pumamomma|pumamomma@yahoo.com|11:16:49|05/25/2009|

the whole bed set. The pillow covers are for the extra pillows you can place on your bed that match the comforter/bed spread.

I have also used pictures from calendars or cards & placed in used/garage sale picture frames.

Also pink & brown is an "in" color.

You can also use wide ribbon tied around your "extra" throw pillows to add a nice touch.
