Ok..we are avid bird watchers here and get tons of diffent species in our very rural area here. We are also in the migratory path for the sandhill and whooping cranes so am used to seeing tons of these in the fields here as well as the large Blue Herons.

Today, in the field across from the house, there are 2 HUGE cranes out there. Got the binoculars out to take a closer look, but can't identify them. They are blue/grey in color, have black wide stripes on top of their head and the about the last 1/3 to 1/2 of their long beaks to the tip is orangish in color. They look similar to the Blue Heron but do not have that long crest of feathers out the back of their heads like the Herons do.

Edited to add: looking again thru binocs and they have a 'beard' of white feathers under their chins as well. Still out there as of 9 am

Looked around on the net and not seen a similar picture yet. Must be a mated pair. They have been out there for a couple hours now. Bet they are almost as tall as I am. Very pretty!

Anyone have a clue what they are? Thanks for any help on this and if you find a link to pic of these can you post it too? thanks!

the gov't doesn't catch you that is..lol! they are endangered species here but they literally cover entire huge fields when they come thru here. The Jasper-Pulaski park is just a few miles from here so we are in the flight path for migration so always hear them and see them around here.
Here is a link to see them: http://www.wbu.com/chipperwoods/photos/sandhill.htm

The ones I am seeing are not Sandhill or Whooping Cranes. They have a small red area on their heads but can't see that in these photos though.. 9|3|Well gee we are not that far from Indiana ya think they could just drop by here in KY and say hi lol lol|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|10:07:38|05/18/2009|

'their' heads. It's black wide stripes. I would say they are Blue Herons BUT I have seen TONS of them..there was even a breeding place they used for many years near where I worked about 45 min east of here..and never seen a Blue Heron without that 'crest' thing at the back of it's head sticking out. These didn't have that crest at all although they did have a 'beard' of white feathers on their necks like the Blue's do. Bizarre...lol They were there for several hours, but now have 'flown the coop' to go elsewhere on their journey. Wish I had a good camera..would have been some great pic's!

The Sandhills have that red on their heads though..TONS of them come thru here 'cooing' for lack of better term of the sound they make. Always see tons in the fields around here standing around. :) 12|5|Well, heck, I dont know then what they were.....we dont get the big shore/water birds here, not enough standing water....maybe a few in migration several miles away by the river, but none in my front yard, lol.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:10:51|05/18/2009|

very close to looking like Blue Herons of all the pics of cranes/herons I have seen. Just didn't have that pointy crown feather thing going on like they do though. Maybe they were cross bred or something. Things that make you go Hmmmmmm....

I know one thing..those things were HUGE! Bigger than most of the sandhill/whoopers we get around here even and bigger than any of the blue herons I have ever seen and there are some pretty good size ones of those around as well. The search goes on........ 15|6|if you look reeaal close you can see the red on their heads in this pic Joy...|Skaytes|skaytez@gmail.com|17:34:52|05/18/2009|

Yeah..I think there is a Audobon society BUT to contact them or the wildlife people they would need to 'see' the birds in person or pics and believe me they would not come out here in the boonies just to look at the birds! lol We have sooo much wildlife here it's "old news" to them even if it is something a bit different.
