Does anyone happen to know the answer to this question?

If a husband is collecting $2,000 a month as his social security allotment and his wife is collecting $1,000 a month as her social security allotment, what happens if the husband dies? Does the wife's amount increase?

Someone told me that the wife would now collect $2,000 a month since the husband's allotment was higher. That doesn't sound logical to me. In other words, does the surviving spouse automatically get the higher amount? 1|1|I know for sure if he was to die first she could collect his as his is highre as Mom did that She thinks that her friend did it the way you arte saying |teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|13:35:52|05/17/2009|

2|1|That's the way I understand it....the higher of the two amounts is what a widow or widower would collect.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|13:56:02|05/17/2009|

My brother-in-law died last November and his widow was entitled to 3/4 of his Social Security - which was higher than hers. If hers was higher, then she would have not gotten any more.

I also was told you have to be married to the same person for least 10 years. I get part of my first husbands ss becauce I am not married 10 years as of now. But it would change in a year or two. I also get 70 % of V A pension when my husband as of now dies.

She is a widow and is 61 years old and I went with her to check on social security. We found out if you are the surviving spouse, you can collect starting at age 60. They gave her the choice of taking hers or deceased DH's. If she choose Dh's because it was higher now than hers, she will not receive a higher benefit when his full retirement age is reached, She will keep the payment amount that she choose now. But, there wasn't a huge amount of difference in the 2 numbers. She could have taken hers now and then the deceased Dh's at full retirement age for the full amount but after she took his, she will not be getting a larger amount later.
