I got a little ticked when i read this article and some of the comments left there. My husband and I make enough money to have to pay the IRS every year but we are classified as lower class because we shop at walmart. I mean I worked at walmart when I was still in school and a few years after school in fact until I got the job I've got now and I made pretty darn good money I thought I wasnt getting rich but I was making a living. If I was this reporter I would be ashamed of posting something like that.

I proudly shop at walmart and I will continue and we do occassionally eat at mcdonalds not often because we dont eat out hardly ever but sometimes we do stop there and eat and let me tell you if anyone works in customer service it takes skill to deal with people and I can guarantee you this reporter couldnt work either job for 1 week before losing it.

Thanks for sharing this but i just got sick from reading it and reading some of the comments what rude people. I was never on welfare when I worked for walmart.

Like I said I'm lower class but the IRS surely doesnt think so when hubby and I roll into h n r block every january

Kathy 6|1|I saw nothing offensive in the article. The quote was that "many people" who eat at MD and shop at WM are economically lower class...NOT everybody. I do both and I know where I|suezz|clearys@comcast.net|07:45:40|05/16/2009|

the sign reads "nothing over $1" but that is NOT true, i've picked up several items that ended up costing more than $1.00. for instance pretzels were actually 1.18 and some type of candy (i can't remember which kind) was actually 1.08 and when i "called" them on it they said the items had been misplaced. yeah right! *rolls eyes*

saying they were a dollar and there were a bunch of them then they are supposed to give them to you then either remove the sign or the item I went to bat once with an ast manager at wm about a remote control motorcycle sign said 19.97 it was really 59.97 There were me and two other women we got the lower price but he wasn't happy lol he looked at me and said "You should know better) ( he was my sons boss lol) I said I do know and that is if the sign says it the sustomer gets it lol Now granted signs can be changed by dishonest customers but this was one of those latge signs over an end cap Not likely changable by a customer ubless one ran from sign to sign to gather just the right numbers lol lol 10|2|I know at my Walmart|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|09:25:28|05/17/2009|

If it's just one item that's mismarked or hanging in the wrong place they won't give you the price but if the entire display or multiple are hung in the wrong spot they will. Around Christmas time I went in and they had the Star Wars Transformers all marked $7 when they are 10.96 or something but it was two whole displays wrongly priced. So I walked the cashier back and showed her the display and they price changed it.

Ya know Cathie (mackiesmudder) had a good point. So where do the 'elite-middle class' go by their tape and other little odds & ends??

1st of all, this article states that jobs at Walmart & McD's don't pay very well because they don't require any special skills. I find that incorrect because anytime you're dealing w/the public, it requires good people skills. Hospitals/dr.'s offices, police depts., nursing homes, schools, auto dealers, banks, auto mechanics, restaurants, etc. - these are ALL places where good people skills are required. That means employees should be personable & sociable not to mention patient. They also need to be open-minded & non-judgemental because they're very likely going to be working w/different income classes & several classes of race & ethnicity, be it co-workers or customers. How good would it be for a business to have employees who are bigoted or discriminatory? Good people skills are a MUST & yes, it really is a special skill that some people do not have.
I also feel it is incorrect to state that many people who shop at Walmart & eat at McD's are from lower economic classes. There are many people who patronize both establishments but I feel it is wrong to categorize any specific income class just because the prices of some of their items might be lower than at other businesses. Higher income people may simply be just as shopping savvy as lower income people & I find nothing wrong w/that as it's just common sense for anyone to want the most for their money, in ANY income bracket. Also, I don't know how anyone could even afford to eat out anywhere, McD's or elsewhere, if they don't have much of an income. If anything, I think it would be a rare treat. Or are there 4 rungs on the reporter's income ladder: no income, low-income, middle-income, high-income???

Put a few of the small businesses out of business then only hired a certain few. The town actually had many meetings with the Walmart to make their pay comparable of what the town businesses were paying. I guess T & the rest I know you said Mike was making $35000 I just don't know that in most areas that would be enough to survive supporting a small family like his. I know it would be next to impossible here in Baltimore.
