68 0|0|What's in your gardens this year? I am trying my hand at container gardening this year......|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|17:04:30|05/08/2009|
Posted on May-08-09 at 05:04 PM (Eastern) by 98.213.175.237

got a few tomatoes, banana peppers, jalapenos, chives, and sweet basil to start with....want to add some bell peppers and eggplant, but need more big planters first. I have deer constantly (as well as moles!) in the back yard, so a garden wouldnt be very productive for us, and it is harder to get to the area in the backyard where I'd put a garden, so I thought I'd try the container gardening and keep them on the back deck for easy access and critter-free zone, lol.

So, what do you grow in your garden? Any other suggestions on what grows well in containers?
Joy :)

That's what I'm thinking about doing, trying to do some in containers and set them by the backdoor. We are in a townhouse and no fenced in yard, but figure I could take my chances and see what happens. My sis in-law in NC is planting a garden, plus she's also planting another one for Cheyenne, so that when Cheyenne visits, she will have her own garden with flowers, fruits and some veggies too. I use to live on 4 acres and had a large garden, I love fresh grown veggies and fruits. Only thing is, we had to keep my pot bellied pig out of it and also our dalmatian. LOL. Rebekka

I have onions, beets and spinach at this moment but as soon as it stops raining and dries up I will have squash, green beans, peppers, tomato, potato, cucumbers and I dont know what else yet maybe some radishes. You know you could plant lettuce in pots. The farmers market that I go to there is a lady that puts lettuce in the long planters and lets it grow up and then she brings it still in the planter so people can pick there own so you could try the lettuce and you could also do onions in the containers.

good luck everyone with the gardens

I had the biggest surprise when I got home from work Monday because 2 of my brothers came up here and built me a raised garden and it is 16 feet by 8 ft and 18 inches high. They built if out of deck board and lined it with chicken wire up the sides and bottom to keep the moles out and then laid newspapers in it and then filled it with screened soil and mulch mixed and I just had tears in my eyes and asked them what had I done to deserve it and they said ""you are our favorite sister"" and I said I have to be because I am your only sister!!

Anyways I just have the best brothers in the world!!

We have planted 2 types of squash, cucumbers and tomatoes in it so far and will plant some other stuff this weekend.

Cannot wait for fresh veggies!! 23|2|How cool is that?!!!? Hmm, I need to be some brother's favorite sister.....or only sister for that matter! LOL :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:06:21|05/08/2009|

I have 2 pressure cookers because we can so much but I found my one at a hospice thrift store it was on a bottom shelf in the back and i just glanced down real fast and it caught my eye and I said no way this cant be a pressure cooker and sure enough when I pulled it off the shelf thats what it was and guess what I only paid 5 bucks for it brought it home cleaned it up and works like new. I was very happy with my find. so look around at your area thrift stores.

There is so much you can do with the pressure cooker other then can veggies. I mean I make soup and chili and can it. We do alot of venison cube it up and put some brown gravy mix on top and a little water in the jar and can it off you can do just about anything.

also to keep deer out of our garden we put an electric fence and that keeps them out of it.

good luck gardening everyone

Last edited on May-09-09 at 01:24 PM (Eastern) by 72.51.146.153

okay, found this..

General Description
Cilantro is the leaf of the young coriander plant, Coriandrum sativum, an herb in the parsley family, similar to anise.
Geographical Sources
Cilantro is grown in California.
Traditional Ethnic Uses
Cilantro is traditionally used in Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Asian cooking.
Taste and Aroma
Cilantro's taste is a fragrant mix of parsley and citrus.
History/Region of Origin
Coriander is probably one of the first herbs to be used by mankind, perhaps going back as far back as 5000 BC. It is mentioned in early Sanskrit writings dating from about 1500 BC. The Romans spread it throughout Europe, and it was one of the first spices to arrive in America.
A Few Ideas to Get You Started
Before it is used, Cilantro should be crushed, either by hand or with a mortar and pestle. Cilantro is a perfect addition to Mexican dishes; add Cilantro to salsas and bean dips. Mix crushed Cilantro into sour cream and use it as a topping for chili, tacos, or enchiladas. Sprinkle Cilantro over stirfried vegetables for color and Asian flavor. Add Cilantro to sesameginger dressing when making Chinese chicken salad.

It is very easy to grow. Direct seed in the garden.

I have to dig up the sod in the area I want it before I can do any cultivating so am hoping to get at it tomorrow. I should be doing it today but it's drab & cold out right now. :( Anywho... I plan on having a small garden but w/a little bit of as much as possible. LOL Cukes, watermelon, cantaloupe, carrots, broccoli, green peppers, yellow (small, yellow pear. Yum!) & red tomatoes, potatoes, onions, lettuce, green beans & of course, kohlrabi. May have to put a fence around it.
I know how to freeze most anything for stocking up but will have to enlist the wisdom of my mom to learn the correct ropes for canning. ;) Oh, realized I don't have any pumpkin seeds so not sure if I'll do any of that or not. I did buy & can pumpkin one year but didn't trust myself enough to ever eat it. LOL

and I really dont know how to keep them out! 51|3|Vickie, you can try getting some small stakes & chicken wire (m)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|19:36:04|05/09/2009|

& putting that around your garden. There's also small, steel fencing that's about 3-4" high but it's about $30 for a 50' roll, stakes cost extra of course. I was thinking of getting that to enclose my entire backyard. That way my little dog can run around freely back there & I won't have to worry about rabbits or the neighbors' dogs messing around in my garden or doing their biz in my yard. ;)

I bought a bottle of it at our area tractor supply its like a granual and you just sprinkle it all over in the garden and the smell of it keeps the rabbits and other critters away or thats what the bottle claims and i put it in my garden and it did help we put a fence up but the small critters can go under the fence so thats why i tried the sprinkle stuff 53|1|Mud here....it just will not dry out....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|22:03:43|05/10/2009|

I am alway planted in April sometime, so this is killing me. I do have my strawberries, raspberries and grapes all doing their thing. I have bought my plants, and seeds, tomatoes, 20 so far, different varieties, green bell peppers, early red peppers, sweet banana, and jalapeno pepppers. Eggplants, cukes, zuccini, green beans, might be too late for peas this year, onions, beets, spinach, and lettuce. Butternuts squash, the small pie pumpkins and of cours herbs.

and have from my dads garden last year cucumber and tomato seeds...picked up 2 bags of potting soil, and plant food. I got them started in small pots today and replant them in bigger pots when they start to grow. I wanted to get plastic flower pots at home depot, but they did'nt have any...all they had was those expnsive ceramic pots that were $24.99 and up...Ouch! So I will look at my local dollar store for some big pots for them...Can't wait to see everything grow...will post pics on my blog when things start sprouting..

56|3|Linda, I am also going to start some lettuce this week...I think someone here posted, and a lady at work recommended to use the long rectangular planters to grow lettuce.....I'm giving it a try with two kinds, and my local dollar store and Dollar General have the plastic/resin long planters for a decent price....I'm so excited! :D|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|08:29:42|05/11/2009|

her little one wanted her own garden, so she came up with that idea and it worked great. Of course with any pots, you got to keep up on the watering.
