While I can appreciate the thought of building a memorial for the people on Flight 93, where does our govt get off
thinking they can TAKE the land??? Our freedoms are evaporating before our very eyes......

They've had 7-1/2 years to negotiate with the landowners. To seize property for this type of project is so very wrong.

what happened to the negotiations?
why is this 10th anniversary so important?
this is being driven by emotions and stupidity.

Foreign terrorists take the lives of so many innocent people in our country so our country declares war on terror. Then, our government turns around & feels justified in taking the land & livelihood of more innocent people. Who is going to declare war on our own country's governmental terrorists???
I completely understand & respect wanting to memorialize the loved ones whose lives were so tragically & senselessly lost that horrific day. But for the government to just TAKE something away from more innocent people? I see a load of hypocrisy but NO logic or justice in that. Particularly when those land owners are already more than willing to compromise.
It is an insult & a disgrace to each innocent person on that plane who faught to survive & prevent potentially more tragedy.

11|3|Unfortunately, the amount offered is usually quite a bit lower than its value.... (m)|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|12:52:22|05/08/2009|

It is usually well below the FMV (fair market value) that it would normally sell for. I'm not specifically referring here to the land in PA where the passengers of Flight 93 perished. But in many other cases, if the government, DNR or DOT has wanted land for something, they'll usually make an offer to the land-owner that is below the land's actual value. Of course, this is upsetting to the land-owner because in addition to facing the loss of parcels of their good, useable land, that loss can also adversely affect their entire property's value. The land-owner usually then attempts to negotiate a higher, more fair price but if negotiations aren't able to be resolved, the government/DNR/DOT has gone ahead & just taken it. Other times, one of those entities has actually just TAKEN however much land they felt they needed. :( This happened to my parents.
I would be upset too if I bought 50 acres of land for the FMV only to be told at some point that I have no choice but to either accept an offer much lower than its current value or have it taken out from under me. Granted, property values fluctuate so do increase & decrease, but current values do need to be taken into consideration.
Whether it be the memorial land in PA or land elsewhere, my point is for them to BE FAIR & not try to come up w/some lame reason such as condemnation, public use interests, etc. to acquire it.
But as for a Flight 93 memorial in PA, I would really hate to see it tainted w/bad feelings about how the land was acquired.

12|3|They have no choice but to relinquish the land.....does that not bother you?? This isnt for national security, or life-and-death, or even to better the good of the public.....which is what eminent domain is intended for. This is for a memorial, and while I support the concept, the decision of those heading this project to proceed like this seems in direct conflict of what those people on Flight 93 died for. They were protecting our nation's leaders, protecting our nation....protecting the freedoms that Americans have. Read up on Eminent Domain/Condemnation (last clause of the Fifth Amendment), this is NOT what it was intended for.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|13:37:34|05/08/2009|

I can appreciate the heroes on that flight.. hey, they probably saved the Prez. But I will go on the record here stating that it is a blatant abuse of eminent domain.

Look, do you really need 2,200 acres for this project? No, not really. Even the WTC site where a memorial is did not go about kicking people out of their skyscrapers so that they could have more room to mill around. They didn't kick the Pentagon out of their building either to raise a memorial.

As for being "paid" when I lived in PA a bunch of homeowners were bought out for highway expansion. Appraisals were obtained and trust me, the government wanted to pay the absolute lowest price possible. Is your land worth what you owe on it or just a random number they assign based on comps? I say no... your land is worth what the market would bear and the use of eminent domain is, in effect, forcing a fire sale on people. They are losing their land, and their own plans they had for it. You can do a nice memorial on far less than 2,200 acres. I would say 10 acres is probably sufficient enough. It isn't like they are building Disney World there in rural farm country.

They knocked on our door and said they were taking our house to make way for a road. We had no say in the matter. It was one of the most stressful situations I have ever been in. However, we were greatly compensated for our house, the move and other expenses.

Thanks,
