I wanted to send out an update on Baby Lou and also say thank you to the many of you who have been sending your thoughts and prayers via email, phone calls and otherwise. I am being discharged from the hospital today, however Louie will be here at least until Thursday at the very minimum. He's made great strides over the last few days and his mommy and daddy are so proud of him. In just 4 days he's been able to accomplish many of the tasks that the doctors and nurses here expect of him. He's been able to matintain his own body temperature without assistance, he's lost the extra fluids from birth and his IV and he's been able to keep his respiratory rate under control for the most part. What all this means is, he's down to one last test, which is eating on his own and gaining weight. He's off all his extra support except for a feeding tube. His little body still just too weak and underdeveloped to maintain eating and breathing at the same time. His breathing rate often goes up when he eats and he has to be able to eat on his own before he will be allowed to come home. He's working hard on it, but should be able to eat at least 45 ml of milk from a bottle in about 20 mins, before he can leave, right now he can get down about 15 ml before he gets too tired and falls asleep. He's been progressing really well and we're just crossing our fingers that he'll be able to come home on Thursday. He has a bit of jaundice, which is a normal problem and if need be they'll treat him for that tomorrow. I'm staying at the hosptial for now as a "B Patient" which basically means, I can use the hospital as a hotel for a fee as long as the rooms aren't needed. Lou will be going to work this week, but will be coming by to visit his son when he's done for the day. We're all doing really well, considering this was a big surprise 6 weeks early. All indications seem to be really good for Baby Louie's health, but when we do go home we'll have to take extra care to ensure that he isn't exposed to germs and irritants until his body is strong enough to fight them off. As soon as he is capable of having visitors at home we'll let you know though It might be a few weeks before he is allowed to be around other children. (All this just depends on the pediatrician) He can have visitors at the hospital now, but only 2 at a time and often times we can't hold him as long as we would like to. For now he needs his rest and we'll give him small tests in small increases and hopefully he'll keep moving forward. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and prayers.
