20 0|0|Deadbeat dog officer...What is it going to take?|kellysp6637|frugalk76@aol.com|16:50:37|04/22/2009|

Okay seriously,,,I'm so fed up....my neighbor (the same ignorant one) has two LARGE German Shephards that looked to be mixed with something else. They are new but EXTREMELY large and muscular. Anyway, they roam loose often and there is a leash law in our town. I've called the dog officer twice and just last Friday emailed him pictures of the dogs IN my daughter's play yard......He has yet to respond to my email and I'm pretty ticked off. First off, these dogs are extremely large and until they get up in the morning and PROMISE me they will NOT bite anyone, then I simply don't trust them....Second, I don't own animals because both my daughter and my husband are severely allergic to them, and Third, I don't want dog poop in my yard from someone else's dogs.....

Anyway,,,everytime I see them in my yard I'll be taking pictures and documenting it.....I'm just beyond furious the dog officer is not addressing this issue.....and wonder if he understands the seriousness of it....if these dogs ever attacked, they would do SERIOUS harm if not kill a person.....I just placed a call today to follow up with my email with the pictures....if I don't hear back from him, who then do I contact to address this issue???? As it stands now, I'm afraid to let my daughter out in our yard (even while I'm on the deck, because I never know when they will be loose and our yard is so big that there is NO way I could ever get to her fast enough if they came after her)...

What would you do? (I don't have the kind of neighbor you could rationally talk to and explain my concerns,,,they always say they won't harm a fly).... 1|1|Call the police |teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|16:57:17|04/22/2009|

2|1|Is the dog officer you're contacting a local position or a county position? Find out who his supervisor is and call that person....and if no results from that person, keep going up the chain of command. You could call the police, as I imagine they'll call the dog officer, maybe they can light a fire under him to do his job...but then the supervisor wont know what a slug they have as a dog officer, lol|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|17:04:01|04/22/2009|

he has a town police email address.....I'm going to give him until tomorrow to respond as I think I've been MORE than patient....it's just frustrating because I've done everything for him other than bring the stinkin dogs there...I mean, I literally sent pictures of the dogs IN my yard, IN my daughter's play area....so there is NO disputing that the dogs are loose and IN my yard.....I'm just frustrated....thank you ladies for the ideas...if I don't hear from him, I will take it higher....it's just so frustrating,,,,why is it so hard to get people to do their jobs now a days????? I mean seriously....I'm tired of babysitting people to do their jobs.... 4|3|If it's a local position, then he is on the town payroll....call your mayor, he would have been the one to appoint him to that position....I am assuming your police are also located in your town hall/city hall, as it is in my town. I hope you can get some results for this situation, you are right to be concerned.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|17:22:08|04/22/2009|

...dealing with neighbors who abused dogs. You will be shocked to find out it took nearly a year to put an end to it.
First off if you live within city limits.......you must first deal with the city. Start with finding out if there is a dog catcher and who it is. Speak with them. Then move on to the Mayor or City Manager. When push comes to shove visit, DO NOT call, the local animal shelter. There is some kind of county ruling board in regards to pets. Usually connected with animal shelters. They have direct contact with a county's Deputy Sheriff who is in charge of passing out fines. These fines are big and if not paid the owners will go to jail!

This will be a fight or was for me. Take notes on when and who you talked to. Make notes on what the neighbor's dogs actions are. I never once spoke to the neighbors about what was going on in their yard. But during all this we had 2 slashed tires and also one 5 yr old dog that died suddenly. Please don't take these complaints lighty. And do remember there are NO bad dogs only bad dog owners!

Drop me an email if you need any help. 7|1|Call and speak directly to the Chief of Police-This is that officer's boss (M)|tammytwo|tamdesigns@mchsi.com|07:50:35|04/23/2009|

Or that is the way it should be. You may also want to send the photos to the chief and the mayor as well. This should get the animal control officer doing his job.

Most areas have an "Action" type department that airs viewers' problems.

I would let the animal control people know that if I don't get satisfaction very soon, I will be contacting the media. 10|2|actually......|zydeco|kimr@alador.com|11:55:47|04/23/2009|

It doesn't work that way here. The city dog catcher is a city worker....not under police.

I would also be very careful about contacting media. You never quite know how the story will be told. This is a simple issue...you would think. If the city has a leash law then there's a reason for it to be inforced!

he did have to grant an easement to Comcast to resolve the issue so atleast that has been straightened out...but I'm still researching everything else....and the damage his actions caused on the families it affected has been done. He may own the poles, but his greed, ignorance and deceit has turned the entire road against him....I hope his free cable is worth it.

Thank you for asking..... 11|1|Here they are county employees, but will not come get a dog|sheliar|sandk95@embarqmail.com|12:23:04|04/23/2009|

We live outside the city limits, so the animal control person (who works out of the animal shelter) will not come out here to pick up a dog. They are not allowed to pick up dogs outside the city limits because there is a leash law, but it only applies inside city limits. They will come put a dog trap on your property, then if the trap catches the dog, they will come pick it up.

To be honest, this is why we put up a fence. It was not to keep our dogs in, but to keep all the other neighborhood dogs (our neighbors have pit bulls) out. The few times we have had problems with neighborhood dogs, the sheriff's office was the one called, since they are the county authority. This is definitely one of those "good fences make good neighbors" kind of things.

I know this sounds cruel, but you could always go tell your neighbor that you are putting poison out for mice or something and if they want to keep their dog alive then they'll keep it off your property. If you notify them, then the dog gets into something, there's nothing they can do about it. I know one of my neighbors put out poisoned hamburger for the "pests" in her yard, and the roaming dog she was having problems with got into it and died. She had warned everyone, so there was nothing the dog owner could do.

This doesn’t “sound cruel”. It is cruel! There are laws that protect both humans and dogs. Sometimes these don’t work as fast as we wish. But I would think, “baiting” a dog with hamburger crosses that line. You would be drawing the dogs onto a property with the smell only to kill the animal with poison. This is not a good idea! 20|3|I'm sorry, I was not trying to imply it was a good idea|sheliar|sandk95@embarqmail.com|10:22:41|04/24/2009|

As far as it being cruel, if you notify the neighbor and they are the ones who don't take responsibility to keep their dog off your property KNOWING that you've put out poison, then they are the ones being cruel in my opinion.

Follow up is is very important! To the point of being a pest. Our City Dog catcher cussed me out for calling so much. That action only got him into to deeper do-do. These dogs are going to be in your yard until someone explains the the leash law to the owners. What gets their attention is what happens if they don't comply.....fines, dogs taken away, ect.

wish I culd say we had better luck than you, but it was the same, we have two pit bulls behind us, they used to get loose all the time! We have lots of kids around, animal control came out and said we would have to take photo of them loose and then show up to court for them to do anything, and only if they hurt someone could they do something otherwise, until they hurt someone? That was completely crazy, so when they maul a kids face off? It got me so mad, and the owner claims the dogs have gone to obedience school and are well behaved, we have a super nice golden retriever, and as much as he loves the kids I will never trust him 100% with the kids, he is still an animal, so thinking a pit bull is well behaved all of the time? Ugh, this whole issue gets me so upset after everything we dealt with, luckily enough people called animal control (in their defense animal control did speak to the owner every time) that I THINK he seems to keep the dogs in check now, but you never know?
