9 0|0|Does anyone have a child with mild autism and what are the early signs?|slimnlady|slimnlady@aol.com|18:03:24|04/14/2009|

My son is over 2 now and still isn't saying any real words. He used to say mommy and daddy but doesn't say tose much anymore. He smiles and laughs all the time and has good eye contact. Doesn't play a lot with other children but that's because he's home alot. He does cry when someone he doesn't know comes over to our house. Turns the light out when we ask him to. Gets his shoes when we ask but really worried about the talking thing. He has words for objects but it's not the right ones. Says "be" for phone and has other words for other things. He does say "Simpsons" when the shows coming on (not quite correct with the "p" sound absent but you can tell he's saying it)and he knows it's on after a certain show. Most of the time he seems to understand what I'm saying but not always. Oh and he shakes his head back and forth a lot but none of the hand shaking I heard is common. What do you all think am I being paranoid? Carol 1|1|Carol, I think it is hard to just, to say a child is autistic. It could really be anything. My best friend has 5 boys, all of who had to have speech therapy, and none are autistic. There are some birth to three programs, run by easter seals, that work just on speech. It really helped my daughter. Check your phone book, and don't worry(I know easier said than done) Donna|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|18:20:15|04/14/2009|

might have some info about well baby checks and usually they will screen kids under 3. Call ask your Dr. ?

Some kids just talk later (often boys do) be sure to talk to him lots, sing songs, make silly sounds and encourage him to copy you. It's great that you are concerned and looking for answers (wish all parents did) HTH Lauri 3|1|I think the best thing to do is go for a well baby check up|glennie58|glenn_scott@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu|20:13:45|04/14/2009|

ask your peds doctor about your concerns, they can refer you to the right people, that is how it happened for Dashi.
they know what to look for alot of the times and can help you get professional answers to your fears.

but they never diagnose before 3, because these things are so common in boys and are usually NOT autism IMHO 4|1|I have an autistic child..m...|Isha|tm2ewing@sbcglobal.net|21:32:50|04/14/2009|

and that doesn't sound like her... the spectrum is so broad though its hard to know...

On the other side he sounds just like my DD4... He didn't talk either at 2. He did understand everything I said and did what he was told... I took him to his pediatrician for his 2yo well visit and he wasn't worried at all... The doc said having 2 older sisters (his other mothers lol) and a mother who did everything just by him pointing or grunting... why bother talking lol... and he was right... A few months later DS started talking almost in full sentences...and now we can't shut him up :)

Edited to add... I agree with the above person.. Take him to his pediatrician, if they think something is going on the will tell you.. 5|2|Thanks so much for all the advice|slimnlady|slimnlady@aol.com|21:56:08|04/14/2009|

my daughter is 12 now and said NOTHING until she was 4 and then it all blurted out lol i was worried that soemthing was wrong like you expressed... autism.. or somthing of those lines.. i had her checked as people told me she might need her tongue clipped.. doctor said all was fine... she was very inactive as the other kids her age were the opposite..

i found out in her fathers side their were kids with speech delays and autism..

we ended up going to a special school for her for 2 years that worked on speech and not grades etc.. and her first time that she ever spoke.. i didn't understand a word she said.. everyone told me that was normal.. but gues what ? SHE WAS SINGING IN SPANISH & FRENCH

thats why i had no idea what she was singing lol every morning in the class they would sing hello and how are you to each child taking turns in english , french and spanish.. to keep the childrens interest
the singing caught her attention i guess lol and those were her first words all at once lol

after that i had to "sing" things to her to get her to say and remember them... people thought i was crazy but as moms and dads we know we would do anything to help our kids succeed :)

she didn't begin to fully talk until age 5...

NOW, today at age 12.. she is talking as all girls do and never shuts up :)she had a speech delay and even though she has few troubles with words nowadays no would would ever think she had only been talking since she was 5..

Until we had him tested, we didn't realize he preferred spaghetti, cherrios after sitting in the milk, lo mein, etc. didn't eat much in meats. Dr said they were too hard to chew. Did a year of oral motor therapy--- easy stuff- blowing a cotton ball with a straw (like a race)- and to get certain sounds they put mm on your tounge and direct where the candy should go (for an L, at the roof of your mouth)

He's 9 and fine. but many times uses the wrong word- a work that sounds like the word he wants- and hates to read- I am still curious that he missed something in the language based area but school seems to think he is ok. Of couorse they hate spending any money on testing. 9|6|My son has PDD-NOS its a form of autism|MADCAT2C|MADCAT2C@cox.NET|02:28:26|04/16/2009|

Pervasive developmental disorder - none other specified.

He was diagnosed at 4- he had speech issues and I just felt he was differnent. Speech therapy def. help. Once he could talk to us his dehavior changed for the best --- now he doesn't shut up :)

He is a very smart child - he just got into a advanced studies magnet school for next year.

His issues are - he is very literal - he doesn't quite see the world as we do. He doesn't understand his actions can hurt other's. He doesn't really understand when someone is joking with him.

Dr said he has a wonderful memory 98% -- he doesn't forget much but likes things in routine.

He is 7 now. He is a great kid - his Dr basically called him socially ackward - which fits him well.

---- There are so many differnt things that it could be/if it is anything at all. She your Dr and see what they say. If you caught it early it can make a big difference.
