pj is going to be SIX in May and he STILL doesn't understand what WHY means. he does not "get" what people mean when they say WHY did you do this or that or WHY didn't you do this or that or WHY is this this way or that that way.
we have tried and tried to explain to him what WHY means. i've even tried answering the question(s) myself FOR him and having him repeat it but he still doesn't get it.
i am at my wits end over this.
PLEASE can someone tell me how to teach this boy what WHY means.
and no, he has never gone through the WHY stage (ya know, asking why, why, why, why over and over again until your only answer is i don't know).

how come also, like what reason do you have for doing that or how come you did that rather than why did you do that, maybe try to explain to him what reasoning is and how everything has consequences, good and bad and how why is about just wanting to know answers, I know alot of times when I say what or what to my kids it is because they are doing something wrong, I have two boys 4 & 6 so they are always fighting or jumping off bunk beds and I will say why did you hit your brother or what is going on in the room, so they usually know they might be in trouble, could he be associating it with something like that?

let his teacher's know and whatever they are doing to help (if anything at all) isn't working either.
we had another event tonight and i did everything suggested and he still doesn't "get it".
when you ask why, or how come, or the reason he says what happened to him or the dog but not WHY it happened, what led up to the final event. (am i making sense?)
for instance, tonight the dog bit his hand and i asked WHY the dog bit him. all he said was coby bit me. then i asked how come coby bit him and all he said was coby bit him. then i asked him what the reason was that coby bit him and he said coby bit me.
ugh!
after all of that (twice) just to see if i could get the reason out of him i said, did coby bite you because you were being mean to him? and he said yes, coby bit me. so i said, well then the reason coby bit you was because you were mean to him so don't be mean to him ok? he said ok then i siad what was the reason coby bit you and again, he said coby bit me.
we have been going through this cycle for 4 years now (at least) and i just don't know what to do. it's the same exact thing over and over again.

Have you asked him very concrete questions? He may not see the incident from the dog's point of view as to why the dig bit him. Have you tried something very specific and simple.

we have been trying to get him to understand the word WHY and REASON for four years now (we have just instituted HOW COME thanks to tina's suggestion)........................ it's not that he doens't get cause and effect it's that he doesn't understand what we mean when we ask him WHY or HOW COME or WHAT REASON. all he does is reitterate what happened. last night's thing with the dog was just an example of what happens when something happens and we ask why. if you ask him not to do something he'll reply with a "becasue it does this or that" so the cause and effect is not issue here, it's getting him to asertain what WHY means without having to tell him over and over again.

one of his favorite movies is MADAGASCAR and one of his favorite scenes is when alex the lion is dreaming about steaks becasue he's so hungry. but if you ask him WHY alex is dreaming about steaks he says "alex is dreaming about steaks or those are steaks mom" he doesn't say "beacuase he's hungry mom".
