In addition to replacing the battery, they should also be gently vacuumed to remove dust. Most experts agree that smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area. An escape plan is a must. Everyone (including adults) should practice escaping from different areas of your home. It is recommended both ionization and photoelectric alarms be in homes. Ionization will alarms for the "flaming" fires and Photoelectric will pick up the "smoking or smoldering" fires. Combination alarms that include both technologies in a single device are available.

and absolutely love them! If your alarm goes off during the night, you know how you are disoriented and don't realize immediately whether you hear a car alarm or a siren or a fire truck? Well, with the talking alarm, you hear a very clear voice saying "fire, fire" so you instantly are aware of the situation.
After we realized how great these talking alarms are, we went out and bought 3 of them for my in-laws and installed them. Since they're a little hard of hearing, the "voice" makes it so much safer for them.
We bought them at Wal-Mart.
