I use american spirit tobacco in the can and a machine to roll my own cigs. It costs about 1.50 a pack and american spirit has no additives or chemicals like the other brands. It tastes great and it is so much cheaper. You just need the loose rolling tobacco, king size papers with filters in the box (zig zag brand is best) and a machine to make them, my machine cost around $25.

Lots of people I know are doing this now and once you get the hang of it, pretty easy to do. Sometimes I don't have time to roll a pack and I buy marlboro and YUCK, they are awful. American spirit tastes the best and even if you buy a pack of american spirit, it costs more than all the other brands. So instead of me paying 5.75 a pk for american spirit, I make my own for 1.50 a pk.

so.......they will be even higher........my hub smokes like 2 cartons a week!!!!!
i dont smoke.......but we bought a machine..and he/we have been rolling some of his too...that one sack of tobacco..we got..we paid like $8..and it rolled a bit over 2 cartons..........so all i can say..is he better get used to the "roll your own cigs" cause we are not gonna pay that much for a carton of generic cigs.........that is stupid.......

its like everything else......they go higher and higher......but you dont see the poor old farmer getting paid higher and higher for his crop.............

at this rate................"kentuckys #1 cash crop.." would be almost cheaper that cigs...if u know what i mean....... 4|1|The new higher Federal tax on all cigarettes (and other tobacco products)|ForrestLayne|wechuckwood@gmail.com|14:21:26|03/12/2009|

will go into effect April 1. Also some states are adding an additional increase in their state tax on tobacco products.

The new higher Federal tax is from Obama signing a bill in Feb.
http://www.wkrg.com/financial/article/federal_cigarette_tax_going_up/23323/

"The major tax increase on cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and cigars will fund a $32.8 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, providing coverage to an additional 4 million children."

I'm not a smoker, but I think it's simply wrong to punish people who smoke by raising the price so high they can't afford to buy them...if they are going to raise the prices of things that are bad for you,,,then they better start heading to the liquor stores...because drunk drivers are bad for you too,,,,yet I don't see officials trying to gouge liquor drinkers.....it's insanity!

more people who already suffer in many ways will suffer more and if you don't like it or can't afford it then stop in the end you'll be better for it My Dad was a heavy smoker and an alcoholic died from cancer at the age of 55 had it in his lungs and liver he never lived to see 4 of his grandchildren born or the birth of his greatgrand child all of which he would have been better off seeing than missing

cigarettes is the sole cause of lung cancer i know people that smoke until they are in there 80s or 90s and dont get lung cancer. and i know people that died from lung cancer and never smoked in there life, i had a friend that just died from lung cancer and she never smoked nor does her husband. you cant smoke in public places any more but if you pay attention to the death notices in my town 90 percent of the deaths are from some type of cacer. i believe its in the air in our clothes and our food. the fire department here just had to change the material in there pants because it was making them sick. at least smoking doesnt kill people like drunks do. men beat and kill there wife and kids, drunk drivers kill everyday. and ive never heard of a marriage broken up because of smoking. 28|2|i disagree as well, it is not a "great thing" for the government to raise taxes on cigs so high people can't afford them..................|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|18:00:19|03/14/2009|

it's discrimination, plain and simple.

it's the same thing as if the government decided to put an extra tax on feminine hygene products in order to help pay for health costs. it's not right. it would be discrimination.

definition of discrimination as per the webster website:

Main Entry: dis·crim·i·na·tion
Pronunciation: \dis-ˌkri-mə-ˈnâ-shən\
Function: noun
Date: 1648
1 a: the act of discriminating b: the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently
2: the quality or power of finely distinguishing
3 a: the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individually b: prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment

it is NOT fair to put the healthcare burden of other people's children solely on the shoulders of tobacco users!

PERIOD!

it is not fair at all!

what about all of the smokers who DON'T have children?

what about all of the NON-SMOKERS who do have children, is it "right" or "fair" of them to ask someone else to pay the healthcare costs for THEIR children? no! it's not. i don't ask YOU (or anyone else on these boards or in the usa) to pay for MY child's healthcare do i? NO! i don't. my husband and i pay for that OURSELVES, just as we should. and, we are BOTH tobacco users so does that mean that now, since we will be paying .70 MORE for each pack of cigs we buy or dip we purchase, that now we should file for frederal health coverage for our son? seems only fair doesn't it?

but let me say this................ this plan is supposed to be for a UNIFORM healthcare plan for children correct? then it should be paid for UNIFORMLY and i mean by EVERYONE, the same amount across the board. not one person paying $50 a month and another person only paying $4.00 into the program. i am all for fair taxation to be put towards healthcare for ANY individual within the usa, but when i can't get health insurance for myself, i find the pill a little hard to swallow that i have to pay for it for others.

......of paying for other people's children. At least that's what they keep saying the tax is for.

Smokers are not junkies. I'm an adult and enjoy smoking. If it kills me. Then I will be dead and won't care. The so-called dangers of second hand are overly exaggerated. Look it up for yourself!!!

In the past year or so several of my friends have quit smoking. All of them quit smoking because of rising prices due to state and local increases to cigarette taxes. I don’t like where things could be headed. As the taxes continue to increase, more smokers are going to quit or limit their smoking to social activities. As a result tax revenue will not reach projected levels. The next step is pretty obvious: another increase in cigarette taxes. Heaven forbid that we make everyone share the same burden. Given the rampant obesity in this country, we should be taxing fast food and finding a way to penalize people who can walk to work but insist on driving.

There is some in Congress that want to raise taxes on everything that they consider "unhealthy"...even chocolate!!!!

The easier answer is for government spending to be lower. Or else taxes on everything will have to increase.

I do not smoke but I think it is ridiculous to try to tax more. I think you will start to see more "family" problems develop in poorer families from raising taxes this much.

like they do when all drunked up. They need to tax alcohol and beer A mother does not neglect her kids when she smokes a cigarette like she does when in drunk stupor. People don't kill others when driving after smoking a cigarette like they do when drunk. Alcohol needs to be taxed like cigarettes even more. Drinking causes so much more harm to so many more people and yet our governor is spending $175 thousand to teach employees to smile. If they can't smile then fire them and hire ones who can For what they get paid and their benefits they are smiling all the way to the bank Lucy 48|5|No but many will let their families go without for the sake of paying the new price for cigs rather than giving them up seems like neglect and addiction to me|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|12:21:12|03/15/2009|

why would a smoker be any different than any other parent? if a parent who smokes can't afford to smoke because their child needs food then guess what? they don't smoke or they buy a less expensive brand in order to still feed their child.

why would you even THINK a smoker would choose to buy a pack of cigs over caring for their child?

most smokers figure the cost of their addiction into their monthly budget, just as they do food, healthcare, clothing, gasoline, and other items. and as the price of food goes up, their budget is refigured, just as it will be for cigs. i don't believe ANY smoker buys cigs instead of caring for their child and for you to even think such a thing is simply silly.

i am sorry tina, but your statements are sounding more and more bigoted in my opinion.

now it very well may be for other children. but it's not for mine.

could i quite right now? nope! sure couldn't, at least i admit that, but i also don't "have" to quit so i'm positive that has a LOT to do with it. now, if it meant the difference between pj getting food and my smoking then there is absolutely no question about it, i would walk away. for sure! would it last forever? maybe and maybe not, no one can know for sure.

but still, all in all, to automatically ASSUME people who smoke do certain things is alarming to me to say the least.

the federal government?

ummmmmmmmmmmmmm yes they do.

they tax the gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, coal, natural gas it takes to get the food to the stores, they tax the wages the workers earn processing the food, they tax the vehicles utilized to get the food to it's destination, ect.

food is already taxed by the federal government, it's just not "looked at" as though it is.

and there are many states that tax food, ALL food, not just "junk".

forgot the link lol

to see the point of discrimination i am talking about perhaps a few of you should look at this chart...........

http://www.rjrt.com/legal/taxBeerWine.asp

it tells how many 6 packs of beer or bottles of wine a person would have to buy in a specific state to total up to the just the STATE excise taxes on cigs, this does not include the previous federal government tax of .39 per pack nor the ADDITIONAL .70 by the federal government as of april 1st.

this type of taxation discrimination is going on all over the country.

all i'm saying is i don't think it's fair, you may not agree and that's fine, but don't belittle me for my opinion as i have not belittled you for yours.

to a tobacco shop to get a machine to make my own, most of the stores around here are pulling the machines and the tobacco off the shelves. phillip morris is for the tax because they figure if you are addicted you will find a way to buy them.the reason they are pulling the bags of tobacco is they dont have the stuff in them that makes you addicted they are pure tobacco. so they dont want you buying them. as for the tax for healthcare for kids i have a problem paying for kids whose parents make more then i do this healthcare is for kids parents who are in a high income bracket thet they cant get on medicaid or other programs. i read on another site that parents who make 75 thousand a year will still qualify for this program and i think if they make that much a year they should be able to pay for insurance for their kids not me paying for it. 85|1|A TAX POEM FOR ALL OF YOU TO READ....|Sharon|s_forshee@hotmail.com|22:04:17|03/15/2009|

Willa 90|2|willa i would ask them WHY the prices have gone up EXACTLY...............|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|08:31:13|03/17/2009|

because if it's due to the federal tax hike, it doesn't go into effect until april 1st AND it's only .70 cents NOT $1. we had some stores adding on the taxes here in jax last week and they had to STOP due to complaints to our congressmen.................. stores are NOT allowed to raise prices due to tax inflation until the actual start date! i had gone into the store i normally buy cigs from complete with paperwork in habd because they had upped the prices a few days before only to find they lowered them again due to the "govermental crunch" for lack of a pbetter term.

so if i were you, i'd ask! hth :)

hth :)

The subject has already been tossed around but has so far been shot down. There's also been talk of making sure all of our online purchases include sales tax but that also hasn't yet gone thru. Sure, there's already tax just for having the internet via our provider but don't be surprised if they try to put a tax on the amount of time we use it, or something.
