I tried growing them from seeds on the windowsil.
I tried Burpee plans and Wal-Mart plants.
Never got them to grow plentifull or ripen early in the season, no matter what i try.
We bought Miracle soil and tomato food, covered with net to keep the squarels and birds away.
Watered daily, did not water as much because we were over watering and they burst.
Never a good harvest. I just do not have a green thumb.
But i keep trying for 7 years now. We are in zone 7 and our growing season is very short. 6|2|I have some organic cherry tomato seeds from my dads garden I want to grow in big pots. We'll see how it goes, I live in a apartment|HONEY11|HONEY1@AMERITECH.NET|18:14:08|02/25/2009|

we have a backyard the whole building uses to bbq and throw parties, it's mostly cemented in(no grass) and just a small bare spot that would hold just a couple plants, but am afraid to plant back there as people in this building might steal my veggies.

The first year planted tomato seeds. Never got beyond the plants flowering.
Second year, i planted seed in march on windowsil. The tomatoes got to green stage and we picked them green in early november to avoid frost. I used them in soups and stews. Some ripened in the bag in december.
I am an still hopefull that we can succeeds one year.
All the lettuce and green onions get eaten by bugs and i do use special powders to keep them away. Only the first couple of weeks we can pick some lettuce, the rest gets eaten away by critters.
Planted 3 fruit trees 2 years ago: peaches, pear and cherry.
Only peaches blossomed and produced the fruit, only to be eaten by squarels and birds.
We have too much of a wildlife. Got a rabit also last year. The rabitkeeps ripping my lawn building the nest in a new spot everytime. I found a turtle, a baby owl, a baby bird, snails and a bees that build a nest under a roof and in the window under a mosquito screen.
Its a real zoo. LOL. 9|4|how much sunlight do the tomato plants get|WillaD|wila111@bellsouth.net|20:31:18|02/25/2009|

do you put them in the ground or leave them on the windowsil in pots,
how big are your pots if you if they are on the windowsil, something
is stunting their growth,do you keep the soil loose around your plants,
if not you may need to add some planting soil for veggies

Hi,

we are also waiting to get into the garden.

Going to plant more this year.

hubby put a 3ft fence around the garden, as my 2 doxies would eat all the grape tomatoes, ha.

but the dogs keep the birds and squirrel's away.

We planted Jermaine Johnson tomatoes last year, and they were great, very large ones.

and I have flowers that border the 2 fences in the back, hollyhocks, wildflowers, I quit planting sun flowers,
the squirrels got them, it was funny to watch them thou.

Hi ladies, glad to see you here and thanks for replying to my post:)

Gwkatt2, I know what you mean about growing tomatoes, is it an art or what? Last year mine grew so tall I kept having to cut them back. Got very few tomatoes and those had large cracks. I try to water evenly, but I still get the cracks. Try adding wood ash in with your mulch and then wrap some newspaper around the base of the plants and then heap mulch around them.. Also, when you see them start to blossom, spray them with a little epsons salt and water mixture. It's suppose to help the blossoms. Finally, try planting basil around them...

As for problems with critters, there are some plants that they won't go near, usually the ones that smell like Marigold, Society garlic, gopher purge, chives... using netting and chicken wire might help keep them out too.. As for the birds, I try and keep lots of bird feeders around to keep them happy.

Speaking of sunflowers, I have a mix of them I collected from my garden if anybody wants some. Yesterday I just posted a neat link on my freewebs garden page below that you can help count bees this year.. they supply the sunflower seeds and it's free.. takes very little time.. I've joined.

Cathie, I DO have some Lavender seeds I just bought if you want to email me.. Some varieties are easy and some you really should buy plants or taking cutting from. I lost a lot of my Lavender seeds last year.. I had several kinds.. I think I threw them away by mistake:(

Honey11, you bet i'll go over to your craft blog... :) thanks.
Hugs and good bugs to you all!
Liz

I read about it in some fiction book, it is a way to keep the bug away.
They do not like the smell. I will try it this year. I do not mulch at all. Maybe i should.
I just keep pulling the weeds. Not many of them in a garden patch. 18|1|Just waiting for a nice day......|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|19:34:24|02/26/2009|

I want to get my spinach in early. Going bigger again this year. I did great last year with selling my extras, I kept track of what I sold best and for how much, so hoping this will help me plan better. Between garage sales, plants sales, and veggie sales, I made just over 1000 in my front yard last year, want to beat that record.

It's going to rain all week and I've want SO bad to get out there and at least mulch or build a little plastic hut for starting some seeds... :(

I have loads of Marigold seeds if anybody wants some.. Just email me your address. I collected them all last summer from my garden.. I never plant a veggie garden without Marigolds around the boarder.. :)

I know it's theraputic to pull weeds, but if you have newspaper, not the slicks though, but extra newspaper and you have fallen leaf, just layer newspaper in a problem area and then throw down some leaf over it. Makes great weed deterant and mulch..

Quietwaters, i've wanted to sell my herbs etc for a long time but you know what? I'm shy. I don't like dealing directly with strangers. You've almost modivated me though:)

I find my bulbs at the .99 Cent store. You can usually get a pack of 6. I just bought some daylillies and Gladiolas :)
