I see this alot w/my son. He'll claim to have already looked somewhere but many times I've caught him just standing there, as if he's waiting for it to holler, "Here I am" & wave to him! LOLOL
We spent several weeks last fall hunting for his driver's permit & the paperwork he'd received w/it in order to get the permit renewed. He was adamant that I'd put it in a certain spot as he'd seen it there. Sure did! LOL His permit was in HIS wallet (which he claimed to have looked thru twice!) & the permit papers were sitting on top of HIS computer tower inside HIS desk, right where he'd put them both! Somebody was eating humble pie for a couple days but it wasn't me. LOLOL
