Is collecting alum. cans really worth the trouble? What about other metal scrap?

I just so happen to have 2 large brass boat props that belonged to my ex-boyfriend (now mine since he left them and he's been gone for almost 5 yrs!) and that's what sparked this question since I saw them in the basement yesterday.

Is it worth the time and trouble to collect and recycle money metal items for money?

I printed out a list from a local scrap yard of what they take and the list is long but prices change so not sure what is worth saving and what isn't.

1|1|We do..I think it is great...the prices will vary from time to time...At one time cans were .80 per lb...has went down now...But, brass and copper is still pretty good...YES, you should save it...very worth it in my opinion...|freebiejunkie|joelpoole@msn.com|12:47:05|02/11/2009|

3|3|yeah, that was a great price, now the cans are down to .30 pr lb....I would just save it all(if you have an area) and call from time to time and check the prices...wait until they are higher to take in|freebiejunkie|joelpoole@msn.com|13:20:16|02/11/2009|

I recycle all of this stuff. I pick up the cans when I walk my dog and the deposit ones I take back for the five cents in NY and any ones that are not deposit or aere flatten out I throw in a barrel in my garage and take it back when the barrel is full. I do newspaper also but the market is in negative dollars right now so not taking any. I take apart dead appliances and strip out parts for metal office paper and envelopes with the cellophane removed gets around 2 cents a pound.

I am looking for offers in concealed cash ayor ppef or make an offer in????

I mail all my trades from the post office and get a receipt.

They would be worth more being sold as brass boat props rather than scrap. 9|2|They are old props that were taken off, new ones were purchased (M)|bluh2oeyes|bluh2oeyes@yahoo.com|11:45:09|02/12/2009|

The boat yard that sold him the new props did't even want them as an exchange because they were no good as props...only good for scrap as they are quite old and dinged up pretty badly. That's why they are in my basement. I just haven't scrapped them yet. They only thing they would be good for other than scrap is decoration.

Call an antique dealer. It's just that, I'm thinking, they are worth more to someone than that what scrap pays. Isn't that why the ex dragged them home? Just curious........why did he bring home? Did they follow him? 14|4|{Grin} He did drag them home to "cash" in on them some where sometime later.|bluh2oeyes|bluh2oeyes@yahoo.com|20:02:35|02/13/2009|

Good idea...I'll call around or ask at the flea market.

First I have to figure how much they weight, gotta get my bath scale...so I know scrap value. Figure that would be my min. price then.

Thanks,
