As you may remember I posted a prayer request last week for my nephew. He was born on the 27th and has been diagnosed with downs syndrome. Well, he is not home yet! My brother and sil are going nuts. I feel so bad for them. I never experienced having to leave my child at the hospital. They said that as soon as he is off the oxygen(he is almost there) that he can go home after 48 hours, as long as he has nothing else happen. They will have to also take a CPR class and some other training before he can leave the hospital. Has anyone experienced this? What should I say to them? I can't say "I understand". I do feel so sorry for them, but, I know that is not the right thing to say either. listen to them as they are most likely confused with how to feel about all this. Ask how you can help and the CPR classes are a great idea for everyone. Enjoy your visit! Lauri

my brother said she is keeping herself busy doing things around the house and doing some coupon shopping...he is worried about her being depressed over this...I know I would be by now if if were me....Thanks

check into what types of therapy he can get. I've seen 3 month olds get ot/pt and it helps! Also in time they might want to get a simple book on sign language as I've seen lots of babies sign way before they can talk....and with Downs speech can come very slowly. I used to take care of a little guy who had no words yet but could sing "more music please twinkle twinkle (little star) and being able to sign can cut way down on frustratuion. 5|1|I think helping them out at home, grocery shopping, doing whatever they need to have everything ready is one of the best things you can do for them. Lots of hugs and what can I do for you next? will go a long way toward helping them relieve some stress. They are likely overwhelmed right now.... not only with the birth but the diagnosis as well.
