I just wanted to let everyone know that occasionally emails me that i changed my email addy to: apomsmom@yahoo.com
I just get way to much spam and junk mails in the other one. I am just soooooo depressed right now. My daugther left at 2am this morning (she was deployed to iraq) and to make matters worse, she called to talk to me around lunch time and then her phone was turned off before we got to finish and say our " I love you's " (they put it on hold till she returns) Plus my son is training in camp shelby,ms and he will be leaving anytime. My other daughter brings the grandbaby to me and i am greatfull for him, but how do i deal with being happy with him and being sad and depressed with my other 2 children over seas all at the same time??? Ok .. i am going to go cry some more.

Regina,

My son is currently deployed in Afghanistan and it has been very hard having him gone. I think that the hardest part of it is not being able to pick up the phone and be able to talk to him ( when I want). The good news is that they have access to phones and the internet. Some things that I have done is I now have the IM Messanger installed, a MYSpace and now a Facebook page. These are things that I would probably not have had if he were home. But, they give me the opportunity to chat with him online in real time. They are also great when they upload their pictures from there as well.

I think the part that has made it easier for me is that I can usually log on in the morning and see when he has logged into his MySpace account or something pops up on his facebook page that he was reviewing.Due to the time differences he has usually logged on before I get up in the morning.I then start out my day knowing that he is doing okay. It also helps me to judge what kind of day he is having by what he posts.

He calls frequently and answers all my e-mails and this truly does help. Some things that I have learned over the last year include :

1. The internet frequently goes down (at least it does in Afghanistan). It took me about six months to get used to this and all the time I would worry about why he didn't answer or log in. It has been down for as long as a week before. I finally got it in my head that it was just down and would fuss because it was down.
2. There is an huge adjustment phase that happens when they first arrive.
3. Try not to constantly watch the news or read about it on the internet all the time. Trust me on this one please, it will drive you crazy.
4. Remember that even though they are where they are, there are still fun times to be had. We truly enjoyed the bazooka bubble gum glob contest pictures with all their cheeks popped out like they had the mumps. We also got to see all the statues that they made from those big globs of gum.
5. Try not to always let the first words be " are you sure that you are doing okay over there?" I think that they need some sense of "normal" when you talk to them.

Sorry that this is so long. I just wanted to let you know that it will be okay and it is very normal to be having the feelings that you are having.

You all are great and thanks for the advice ... guess its normal huh? I am sure it will take awhile to adjust. I think working on care packages for them, letters and maybe phone calls from them will help. Plus my fur baby that has heart failure and a upper resp. infection keeps me pretty busy too. We all know he will be gone before they return. And i know this grandbaby of mine will be grown before i realize it! I am 38 and my kids are (son) 21 and (daughter(s) 19 .. those years flew by and now i want them back ... lol

Thanks again,
Regina
