I want to replace my regular phone.
I know Verizon offering Free phone with a 2 year contract.
I never had a cell phone before. What should i be aware of?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Natasha.
Edited to add: this is only for me. My dh gets free phone from work, so, it is only myself who will need it - no family plan, just individual.

1|1|i don't have verizon. i have at&t adn here are a couple of things to ask about and be aware of:|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|12:35:51|01/28/2009|

there are taxes associated with cell phone plans and mine total $14.45 - $15.00 a month ON TOP OF our regular phone bill which is $60.00 so we actualy pay $75 amonth for our 2 phones.

also, at&t offers a smaller cancellation fee as the months go by while you're under contract, you should DEFINATELY ask verizon if they do or if it's a flat fee no matter if you cancel within the first 60 days or the last 60 days of your contract.

i've shopped around and for us, at&t has the best rates, plans and coverage area for what we need. verizon was WAY too expensive for us.

hth and good luck!

edited to add, check at brick and morter stores to see if they offer smaller contracts. i orginally got my at&t contract here in florida 5 years ago and got 2 phones for free and only had to sign a 1 year contract not a 2 year.

Does your plan include free nights and weekend?
Does your plan include roaming or is there additional fees for that?

For us Sprint was the best to go with. We have our cellphones and the broadband card for the computer from them and we have everthing unlimited so we pay a little more for this but with our son he likes to text his friends so we had to add that so instead of paying for each extra seperate we just decided to go with unlimited everything.

Good luck with finding a phone.

Kathy 4|1|The best thing about the plans for Verizon is they include free Verizon-to-Verizon calls....so you can call ANY other Verizon wireless customer (friends, family, etc) and there is no usage of minutes or cost :) We have four phones on our plan for our family and my sons' friends all have Verizon, so we never go over our minutes allowance in our package. :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|18:24:35|01/28/2009|

"Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy." 5|2|at&t offers this as well and at&t also has "roll-over" minutes (M)|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|18:41:17|01/28/2009|

meaning if your plan has 450 minutes a month and you don't use them all they "roll-over" and accumulate and can be used for the next 24 months before expiring. (at least on my plan it's 24 months it may be a shorter amount of time for new plans as mine dates back 5 years).

they also offer free nights and weekends as well. i think verizon does this too.

hth :)

Ive been with verizon for 10+ years... and we kept adding a phone. I pay $60 for the first line (my phone) and $9.99 for each additional line. That was for 500 peak minutes (6am -9pm M-F) and after 9pm on weekdays and all weekend long talk is free!!! Also, when you call verizon cell phone to verizon cell phone (anyone in the U.S. that has a verizon cell phone) those calls are free too!! In other words they don't take away minutes from your peak time plan, no matter when you call!!! That's why our whole family has one...we talk all the time (every day) to our two sons who live hours away and it doesn't take away our minutes!!! My oldest son had unlimited texting because of his job and I upped the minutes on our family plan to 700...
My whole bill runs about $120...with the taxes and 5 phones and unlimited texting for one of them and 700 peak minutes (which we never go over!!!)
You will get a new phone every 2 years....or so much off a new phone. They give you a free one (but it's not one of the newest ones out....)
Email me if you have more questions.

Judy 7|2|judy, don't you have to sign a new contract to get the new phones every 2 years?|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|19:06:06|01/28/2009|

with at&t to get the discounted rates or free phones you must sign a new contract. you can also just out-right purchase new phones for their regular prices though without signing a new contract. just wondering if this is the case with verizon as well.

8|3|Yes, that's correct....if you have a contract plan, you get the "New Every Two" automatically....so even if you continue your plan past your contract ending date, you get a new phone at the "new customer" costs (some phones are free and some are extremely reduced). :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:07:29|01/28/2009|

or do you have the option not to renew?

at&t doesn't make you renew........... but you don't get the free or reduced phones unless you do.

11|5|No, there is no requirement to renew....but you are able to get a new phone (New Every Two program actually allows for a new phone with completion of at least 18 months of service)....no contract is required to get the phone, BUT you must be a Verizon Wireless customer....you can just continue your plan after the contract is complete and be eligible for the New Every Two. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:53:33|01/28/2009|

For example....we had a two year contract with Verizon which we fulfilled, but continued our service as is.....when we wanted to add the boys to a family plan, we were able to get four new phones...one each for my DH and I (the two phones were from the original contract) and two for our boys...DH and I got the free phones (flip phones with a camera) and the boys got the Envi 2's for a reduced price ($79.99, rather than the $389 price tag for buying the phone outright). So, while we changed our service plan from 2 phones to 4 phones, we are not on a contract....but we like our service and prices, so we'll continue as customers. And in about 18 months more, we can all four get new phones again. :)

I am looking for offers in concealed cash ayor ppef or make an offer in????

I mail all my trades from the post office and get a receipt.

you always hear noises in the dark when you work at night 12|1|be aware that no matter what type of cell phone you get there ae places where there is no signal|ppe1952|MATWELL3@ROCHESTER.RR.COM|20:16:44|01/28/2009|

if you have a friend who will let you join her "family' you can get a line for about $15 a month including taxes and fees.

Remember your manners: when god answers your prayers----- say thank you. 13|2|See if there is a discount through your DH work. If he has Verizon. We got Verizon because my DD got 18% discount through her job |eecwz|eecwz1@gmail.com |07:10:14|01/29/2009|

As long as she works there we get the discount, so for 120. plus tax of course. per month we get 1400 min. unlimited txt, pics & flix and 3 phones. Not too bad. Her job did add 2 more phone co. too the discount list Sprint & ATT just haven't gotten around to cking the prices yet.

But I am going to see if I can get a free phone and not have to resign the 2 year contract. Thanks for the info.

I can't believe how many hidden charges come with cell phone service, like
Termination fee for one.
Also read on some site that there are Activation Fees. Is it true? 16|2|Usually you can get that activation fee waived. or they charge you then give you a credit on your first bill for the same amount or better.|eecwz|eecwz1@gmail.com |07:37:58|01/29/2009|

18|1|Really? I am planning to go to Verizon store today. I will see if they offer the same Free phones.|gwkatt2|gwkatt2@hotmail.com|09:07:50|01/29/2009|

Posted on Jan-29-09 at 09:07 AM (Eastern) by 72.229.182.143

Will print the email Verizon sent.
Something new i read today - i can ask for a trial of the phone.
Another words i do not need to lock myself into a service contract, but ask the company to let me use the phone for say 2 weeks and try to use it everywhere i usually go.
Just to test it and see if it works for me. 19|1|Is it true: no tellemarketing calls on cell phones?|gwkatt2|gwkatt2@hotmail.com|09:11:08|01/29/2009|
