My dad has been in and out of the hospital several times in the past few months for heart problems and while in there they found he was VERY anemic and they did several transfusions. My sister and I thought it was odd...we kept saying: "Can't you just give him an iron pill?" But, I guess his iron levels were so low that the transfusions were VERY necessary! From what I have found out since then...I guess this is a pretty standard thing. My dad was awake the whole time and I was with him during one of the IVs. He was even joking with the nurse that the second IV bag (of blood) did not look as full as the previous one and he wanted to make sure he was "getting his money worth!"

I'm not sure what they are doing for him now that he is out of the hospital. I don' know if the anemia occurred due to the other issues he was experiencing or if he is on any other medication for it or not.

HTH and....best of luck...I'm sure everything will go well!

I was told it raises the risk of stroke and heart attack it took about 8 hrs per unit for mine the first one they gave me over night and I slept through till of course they come in to check on you often It doesn't hurt just annoying to have the iv in hth 3|1|I regularly go to the infusion clinic for Iron|ab6333|aimee@accountant.com|11:40:21|01/25/2009|

It takes me about an hour and a half each time I go there.
The great thing is that it really helped me. My fatique got
better pretty quickly. My insomnia got better. And I just
felt better overall. Originally I went three times, two weeks apart.
And that got my level up to 13!!! It hadn't been that high for over
20 years. Then it stayed up for 8 months. Then I had my baby and it
went way down again, which they sad is normal. So I am now take my third
session again this week. Then the dr said I will just have to go in
for a quick blood test every three months and whenever it goes down
again they will hook me up and give me some more.
This is so much better than taking the pills and shots and never having
anything work. This works because it bypasses your digestive system.

Wishing you as good results.

our infusion center has a TV at each station, but I always take a magazine or two
and my iPod, and my Soduku book along cause watching TV can get boring

am concerned. You have helped to give me a bit of relief....
