My sister in law had to have her left leg amputated above the knee due to staph infection. Is there any kind of government assistance? Or help? The biggest problem is that her right ankle is broken so that she will be bed or wheelchair bound for 6 weeks. She can not put any pressure on the broken ankle for that time. Any help or experience is greatly appreciated by me and her family! 1|1|Did she have any disablility insurance through her employer? |Barb09|Barb0969@AOL.com|17:23:57|01/19/2009|

I looked and looked and found no coupons for troll food......SO, I don't feed the trolls!! 2|1|Is there someplace where you can rent a wheelchair? Will her insurance cover it? So sorry for your SIL. My neighbor had two staph infections in the past few years - very hard to get rid of. |Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|18:16:28|01/19/2009|

Considering her broken other ankle, insurance should cover a wheelchair for her. Do check into rehab services too... she'd have to get her bad ankle in shape to help support the left when she is able to get on crutches to walk. Does the hospital have a social worker? They are fairly knowledgeable as to what services she may be eligible for. Very sorry to hear about her leg :(

Get a sturdy bedside commode immediately! Put a heavy kitchen chair tightly against the side of the commode...jamming it against other furniture to make a tight fit so that the commode won't move either... With the arms on the commode, she'll be able to pull herself on to the edge of the bed, without touching the floor...and with a little assistance..and just a little practice, she'll be able to turn and aim her posterior onto the seat..when the job is finished, she can use the arms of the commode, and even support herself with the heavy kitchen chair so she can lean forward on to the bed, hang on to the mattress, and slowly pull herself back in to bed...it ain't easy the first few times...but it certainly can be done with a bit of practice...

Keep in mind, it's almost impossible to overcome gravity when using the bathroom facilites at most homes..too low...and extremely difficult to get up off a couch or chair without extra cushions to keep her taller in the seat.
There are loan closets for items at a lot of the churches, and charitable organizations..and her doctor can write prescriptions for any of those items.

Almost every drug store has the "grabber"...it's an aluminum stick with the claw type grabber at the end of it...perfect for picking up a dropped phone, the TV remote, or anything that she needs and can't quite reach..

If she's a member of a church or service organization...call them too...they'll have lots of references for things (and people) who can assist.

5|2|Viv, excellent suggestion for the bedside commode :) OP, she should be eligible for physical and occupational therapy in her home as well, they will get her the needed adaptive equipement, teach her how to use it as her condition improves. I wish her the best and hope she is on the mend asap.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:50:00|01/19/2009|

I don't know what Osteomyelitis is?? I know she have RA and more. She had her knee replaced 3 times in 1 year. Every time it would get Staph or other problems.

She has 3 kids, but all are grown and live away. They are planning to help when she comes home.

They are working to get some help for her.

She has lots of friends and family that is going to help.

It has just been so hard on her (and me)

Thanks again for the info!!

Have no idea when we will get to come home. I know her insurance is not going to let her go to swingbed.
