It's 20 below zero ACTUAL temp here in northern IN this morning and that is not counting wind chill. Saying with wind chill it's like 35 below zero. Ugghh. Now this in NOT normal in northern IN. I am sure you people farther north are used to this kind of thing but not us. Hubby said first thing this morning that THIS is ridiculous! I feel like we are living in a area like that show 'ice road truckers' this morning. Gee..glad I did errands yesterday when it was only -16 here at 9 am.....actually was warmer at -8 when I went out. Gonna feel like breaking out the bikinis and heading to the beach when we get a heat wave of 25 next week! lol! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! 1|1|We have froz. pipes this AM!!!|shelly|shellysue49@gmail.com|07:37:01|01/16/2009|

ugh....never thought I'd have to deal with THIS in a new house, but DH (does NOT stand for DEAR right now?!?!) didn't put a wrap around the hot water heater or wrap the pipes, etc., so I have NO water at all this morning. been up for 1 1/2 hrs. now and still not more than a *sometimes* trickle. He went off to work, told me he'd call 'later' and see if we had water or not?!

i only had one case of bottled water, the little bottles, and since I bought the PURE pitcher for my refrigerator, we don't drink the bottled water anymore. SOOOO, i boiled some up a little while ago, just so i could wash my face. I also poured enough bottles into the coffee maker to make a full pot for myself....lol. I pulled my hair up because it *really* needs washed, but not going to happen soon.

no school today, due to weather, so maybe i can get my 16 yr. old to run to Walmart when he wakes and buy some gallon sized bottled water. Very good lesson learned here; having bottled water on hand is a necessity in times like this!

Thank heavens we DO have: Heat, electricity and plenty of food in the house...we will survive.
can ya tell I'm NOT a girl scout??!? LOL

living in this old farmhouse we have had a LOT of experience with frozen pipes. If you have a heat source (maybe portable heater or such) and then can plug in in near where pipes were exposed most/ are frozen at..then also put a portable fan there to blow the heat on the pipes, they thaw out usually pretty quickly..within a hour or two. That has always worked best for us. When we had the old bathroom, our drain on our tub would freeze up. We would also use a hair dryer on high heat and aim it at the frozen place to thaw it out. Once they are thawed keep your faucets on a very small stream..both hot and cold..to prevent it from freezing. I have been doing that already a lot this year with running water already and so far no frozen pipes. We had the hot water freeze before as well so it CAN freeze up although have had people tell me that isn't possible. Well...we have been the ones to UNthaw it so know it's true! lol 5|3|Thanks, Kathy....|shelly|shellysue49@gmail.com|08:46:37|01/16/2009|

...I have water again!! as of about 20 min's. ago....so I quickly washed some dishes then took my shower!! lol..I feel so much better now.

We did do as you said..hubby knows ALL of this stuff, so why he didn't prepare AHEAD of time is beyond me!?! That's why I was so furious. he took a portable heater from our bedroom and placed it in the garage near the hot water heater. didn't blow a fan as well, but will remember that next time (hopefully wont be a next time!).

I will keep the water running tonight perhaps, but question?? DO I just keep ONE faucet (Both hot & cold, as you said) on, or do I have to run from EVERY faucet? lol..I'm assuming just one is adequate, but thought I'd better double-check. Can't count on hubby to do this crud so I need to know.

thanks,

bathroom line and kitchen lines are the same lines and bathroom is next too the kitchen here. (yeah..not good thinking on whoever did THAT but old farmhouse, who knows...lol) If I had bathroom and kitchen etc on different lines and away from each other, I would definately leave it running in both/all of them. Better safe than sorry as busted pipes are verry expensive to replace. I would rather have a little larger bill for the water etc, kwim? *smile*

Hubby just called from work..bank sign said -27 actual temp here. Super. Geez...when it is gonna get REALLY cold here?! LOL! That makes wind chill at least -40 outside. great. super. wonderful. Is it JUNE yet??! LOL

Glad to hear you got it unthawed with no broken pipes. Wouldn't want to crawl around under house etc in THIS weather for sure!! 2|1|- 25° here this morning & w/windchills it's about -35°|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|08:11:34|01/16/2009|

A whole bunch of schools were closed yesterday & are closed again today. I didn't leave the house at all yesterday except to make a mad dash to the mailbox to get my mail & a very quick replenishing of the squirrel feeder (bird feeder is still over half full). LOL It's supposed to warm up to a whopping 0 later this afternoon. Wokka! Wokka! LOL
No frozen pipes here but my sister's pipes froze yesterday so I'm sure they still are. She lives in a mobile home w/no basement & is furious w/her dh cuz he obviously hadn't put the heat tape around all the piping she'd told him to. I'm surprised the heat from her fury didn't thaw them out. LOL

are not bad at all really. This is a old farmhouse..we just got 8 new windows in this summer ..but have like 11 or so more to put in yet). We keep the house on 71 or sometimes up to 73 if winds are high and it's very cold due the the temps and wind. We keep the door to upstairs closed at all times and have a door 'buddy' under the bottom to keep the cold out and warm air down here as well. We don't use out upstairs 2 bedrooms but the heat vents are still on up there though as we have daughter's supplies stored up there and have to have a stable temp for them. We have to keep it 'warm' in here for daughter on vent as she can't take much variations on warmth/cold either.

My bill for December..even with that cold we had then..was only a little over $50. Yep..that is it. Remember, I am a BIG advocate for searching for best prices and locking them in for our natural gas heat here so that makes a difference. My price goes down when their prices go down as well so that is reflected in our bill as you can see. I do laundry in ONLY cold water here and I do at least 2-3 loads a day as well with electric dryer. I try NOT to use our oven (gas stove for cooking) if I don't have too, as you can really tell in your gas bill the difference when you use it. Takes a LOT to heat up the reg oven and keep it going. I use crock pot or skillet on gas stove top or electric skillet to cook with.

My electric bill is on budget and is $175 a month. Now you have to remember we have equipment for daughter on vent/oxygen here going around the clock as well as lights and her tv on too all the time for her so that puts a chunk on that to make it that high. Two years ago our elect budget was $130 so it's definately went on the rise but they did raise the rates on it as well for everyone so no getting around that. No other competition here for electric so we have to go with REMC on that. 11|1|I am ready for this cold to be done with....|Quietwaters|Quietwaters39@hotmail.com|08:10:58|01/17/2009|
