My father in law from Arizona sent grapefruit & lemons to us in NY, what is the story about them affecting your meds? I have made juice out of them-combining with orange juice too...will just "eating" the grapfruit affect the meds??

But when he had to start taking Digoxin for congestive heart failure, he was no longer able to drink any grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit. W/some medications, grapefruit/juice can either decrease or increase the affects of the medication, which can be dangerous. What exactly is in grapefruits/juice that causes it, I can't remember now. Also w/some meds, you *can* eat/drink grapefruit/juice but there *has* to be a certain length of time in between taking the meds & eating/drinking the fruit/juice. I know there are several heart & blood pressure medications it affects, but yes, be sure to check w/your doctor & your pharmacist.
