But baking them in the oven instead of the machine is our preferred way.

Hubby uses it weekly for pizza crust (which is wonderful.) And I use it occasionally for various types of homemade bread type items, but again, I put them in the oven to bake.

If you do not mind secondhand, we just bought a used one as we wore our old one out and I seen they have tons of them at the goodwill type store too.

makes everything under the sun....He has had a kenmore, and it last several years....think this time he ended up with oster from Kohls...My Sil has had issues as she can be challenged...But he seems to be likingit...he makes all different kinds-he actually goes out to lancaster pa a few times a year to a shop to get flours and add in ingredients....if you have an amish area near you, am sure they have a store for basics....HTH...Jodie 3|3|I 2nd what Stacey said my gma uses it for just mixing.. it doesn't bake well in it.. |Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|19:23:03|01/10/2009|

Bakes a 1 1/2 or 2 pound loaf, I bake in mine real often, but also use it to mix my crescent rolls and pizza dough all the time. Got it for 5.00, it had been used once. Found one for my daughter too at a garage sale. If you find it that way, it is a cheap investment if you decide you don't like it, not much loss.

5|1|Baking the bread in the oven, gets my votes as well. The texture of the crust, isn't right, when done in the bread maker. Also, if the bread does not slip out easily, the bread rips.|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|07:55:24|01/11/2009|

I've gone thru' several machines. My favorite is a Breadman. The worse one had a yellow front for the settings. Impossible to read! But even at that the machine worked fine.
Buy your yeast at a wholesale store like Sam's. Here I can get 2-one pound bags for under $5. I toss one bag in the freezer for later use. It keeps for years! Keep the other in a sealed jar in the fridge for use.
As time goes on you may want to invest in a kitchen scale. Rather than go by cups of flour you should weigh the flour. The difference between 2 flours maybe as much as 1/2 cup. This is very important during Summer when it is humid.
It is also a good idea to use bottled water. Floride can kill yeast. (I'm lazy and just dump every thing in the bucket. I don't take the time to test the yeast.) HTH 7|1|Tap water is fine. I have a degree, in baking and pastry arts, and have never heard of flouride killing yeast. Also, I have been using tap water, for twenty years, and never had my yeast fail. As far as I know, as long as your yeast is properly stored, only using waster above 115 degrees, can kill it. You proof yeast, to make sure it isn't old, and inactive.|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|11:38:35|01/11/2009|

Water of medium hardness is considered most suitable for baking bread. Both too hard and too soft water, as well as water high in fluoride and chlorine, will result in short, stubby loaves. If you suspect you have a water problem, try substituting bottled water or milk.
11|3|This I agree with, as it reduces the elasticity of the gluten, in the flour. I was merely saying, flouride does not kill of yeast.|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|07:10:47|01/12/2009|

I use a bread holder that has guides for a knife. Sadly not the best tool. The one I'm using now came from the King Arthur Flour site. Anyone have an actual bread slicer???
