I happened to notice this phenomenon for a while and I just don't understand it.

People list gift cards on ebay all the time, which is fine. But what I don't understand is how a $100 gift card gets bids of $120 or more. Why oh why would you bid more than the gift card is worth? There are MANY of these all the time. What am I missing? Anyone know? 1|1|No answer. But I am just as baffled as you are, as I have noticed this as well.|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|19:15:20|12/28/2008|

You get cash back for buying at certain stores. From what I understand about those gift cards is that ebay will yank them (and you will probably be sanctioned) if they alerted to a card being sold for over the face value.

lauren

edited to add: since ebay is generally a self-reporting type of entity, there's still plenty of them being posted there

9|2|it's just like the "mypoints" program, except you get cash back, not gift cards|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|20:03:06|12/28/2008|

So is the only way to get this "kickback" by purchasing the cards thru ebay? 14|2|oops, sorry if I didn't make it clear|Beaglesfly|lmllr77@aol.com|13:44:59|12/31/2008|

Ebay isn't the only participating site; there are many other participating stores (and different stores will give you a different percentage back).

Here's a quick overview from the www.live.com/cashback website:

- Search for cashback deals at Live Search cashback. Each time you click a Live Search cashback listing, you'll find great deals on the product you chose. Your results will clearly list the cashback savings you'll receive off the store price, and your final bottom-line price that includes tax and shipping costs.

- Compare and sort products by the bottom-line price. Click the best deal to go to the store. Everything you buy during that store visit will be eligible for Live Search cashback. On your first time using Live Search cashback, we will ask you for an email address so we can tell you how to quickly set up your free cashback account.

- Keep saving money each time you use Live Search cashback. Every time you make a qualifying purchase, we'll send you an email to confirm your Live Search cashback savings. Usually 60 days after your purchase (although this time period may vary for some stores), and when your cashback account reaches a balance of at least $5, you can claim your cold, hard cash.

Click through their site when you want to do your online shopping, and they will give you a percentage of your purchase amount back.
