I'm planning to make a honey-baked spiral ham on C'mas Eve., and I don't know why I cannot figure out side dishes to go with this?!

I could use ideas from you all.....some of us like green-bean casserole, but not sure I'll make it. Do mashed potatoes go w/ham?? We all love stuffing too, but doesn't that seem like an "odd" side dish? I make my stuffing in a casserole dish. I don't know how to do a layered (pea, or whatever) salad...never made one.

Right now I can only think of buttered rolls...how lame!!

Help, ladies.

TIA,
Shelly 1|1|Mashed potatoes, definitely!!!|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|10:34:10|12/18/2008|

Stuffing - I think as long as you don't use a chicken or beef stock in it it should be fine. Anything with pineapples in it; sweet potatoes; cold potato salad... just a few things I can think of! 2|2|Thanks! Mashed potatoes...|shelly|shellysue49@gmail.com|10:55:09|12/18/2008|

..are a HUGE fav w/all the kids in the house, so I'll do that for sure. Why not the chicken (never use beef) stock work for stuffing? My recipe DOES call for that. Stuffing's another SURE hit in this house, so my mind automatically went "there", but I wasn't sure it all goes with HAM as well as Turkey, like @ Thanksgiving.

Thanks again,

I'm always obsessing about food, so am glad to think about it for someone else for a change. Dieting sucks, LOL!
I don't eat ham myself, but have family who do. Some sides that come to mind are scallop potatoes, twice baked potatoes, steamed broccoli and carrots (YUM!), corn, fruit salad, and most definitely those rolls.

Now I have to go eat breakfast or I will eat something really awful before I think about it. That all sounds good.

I like the idea of broccoli (we do it w/cheese on top, dh's "way") and maybe carrots, I love those either just buttered or w/a brown sugar glaze! Yum. Scalloped potatoes sound really good too, think I'll have to decide between those and mashed potatoes.
You really helped, I appreciate it!

... I would be afraid of flavor conflicts. I would just use water and season the stuffing with garlic powder, onion powder, pepper. But you know, it's probably fine. Not like you can actually "taste" the stock!!!

I'm hungry!!! 12|2|Ok,. Robin...got it...|shelly|shellysue49@gmail.com|12:41:39|12/18/2008|

...I'm with you, I don't think anyone would actually taste the stock part of the stuffing. I make sage stuffing, so plenty of other spices to take over. I might just make it since like I said everyone here loves it!

the ham - i always use toothpicks to hold sliced pineapples on the ham, the I use the pineapple juice and mix with
brown sugar to make a glaze which I pour over the ham before baking
baked macaroni and cheese - not the boxed kind, we make it from scratch and its baked in the oven
green beans - slow cooked in a crock pot, usually add crumbled bacon and onions to them
potatoes - not sure I want a dish that I can mix up ahead of time and all I'll have to do is put in the oven....
I vaguely remember a recipe that uses hash brown, cheddar cheese and I think sour cream
broccli and cheese sauce
dinner rolls

I am trying to gear my menu towards being hassel free. Our grankids will be here and I want to be playing with them, not stuck in the kitchen cooking kwim???

My family and DH's family love baked beans with ham.

And any kind of cheesey potatoes, but my favorite are Julienne potatoes (you can buy the BC box mix or make your own). My boys prefer hash browns, but they're my fussy eaters.

I also love pickled beets with it, and brown sugar glazed carrots.

One of my mom's favorites is potatoes and carrots cooked up with lots of butter and a touch of brown sugar. Boil them til soft, then add lots of butter and the sugar.

My mother-in-law always does potato salad with ham.

You all are making me hungry, and I'm snowed in today and didn't get to the grocery store yesterday. Knew I should have headed out at 9:30 after picking up my son from martial arts, but was really hoping they'd exaggerated the snow.

Check out my site at http://susieed.tripod.com/
